IPM Checklist
Safe First Steps for Garden Pests โ an IPM Checklist
The short answer
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is simply the habit of reaching for the least-toxic effective option first. Before any spray: prevent (healthy plants, clean beds, rotation), monitor and identify what's actually there, and decide whether the damage is bad enough to act at all โ a few chewed leaves usually isn't.
When you do act, start physical: hand-pick larger pests into soapy water, blast aphids and mites off with a strong jet of water, and use row covers as barriers. Only if that fails, step up to the least-toxic product that targets your specific pest โ insecticidal soap or a neem-based product โ never a broad, persistent synthetic as a first move.
The IPM order of operations
- 1Prevent โ Right plant, right place; keep beds clear of diseased material; rotate crops so pests don't build up.
- 2Monitor โ Check plants regularly for pests and damage, and judge whether the damage is actually enough to warrant doing anything.
- 3Identify โ Correctly ID the plant AND the pest before acting โ the right response depends entirely on what you have.
- 4Manage, least-toxic first โ Work up the ladder: cultural โ physical/mechanical โ least-toxic product, only as far as you need to go.
Physical controls to try first
- Hand-pick beetles, caterpillars, and egg clusters into a cup of soapy water.
- Blast aphids, mites, and whiteflies off leaves with a strong stream of water.
- Use floating row covers as a physical barrier (remove them at flowering for crops that need pollination).
- Remove and destroy heavily infested or diseased plant parts to slow spread.
If you do need a product
Choose the least-toxic, most pest-specific option available โ insecticidal soaps and neem-based or other naturally-derived products โ before any broad-spectrum synthetic. Spray only the affected plants, follow the product label exactly, and avoid spraying open flowers to protect bees.
โ Always read and follow the product label โ it is the law and the safe dose. GardenSays never gives pesticide rates or DIY chemical mixes; identify your pest with your local Extension office and use a labeled product as directed.

- NC State Extension โ Extension Gardener Handbook, Ch. 8: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) โ IPM is a decision-making process for the least-toxic control, built on prevention, monitoring, identification, and management, escalating from cultural to physical/mechanical to least-toxic chemical controls only as needed.
- Clemson Cooperative Extension (HGIC) โ Integrated Pest Management (IPM) โ IPM seeks the least-toxic method; physical controls such as hand-picking, water sprays, and row covers are first options, and if chemicals are needed the least toxic, most pest-specific product is used first.
- US EPA โ Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Principles โ IPM uses monitoring and identification with action thresholds, prevention, and a hierarchy of controls, using pesticides only when needed and selecting lower-risk options.
