Tomato Mosaic and Cucumber Mosaic Virus: Diagnosis and Prevention
The short answer
Mosaic viruses cause a mottling of light and dark green (or yellow) on the leaves, often with malformed, cupped, or narrow shoestring and fern-leaf growth, stunting, paler bushy plants, and much-reduced or misshapen fruit; severity varies with virus strain, variety, and temperature. The two common culprits on tomato are tomato and tobacco mosaic viruses (ToMV and TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV).
They spread very differently. ToMV and TMV are extremely stable and mechanically transmitted, by handling, tools, grafts, sap, contaminated seed, and even tobacco products on hands, and can persist in debris for up to about two years. CMV, by contrast, is spread plant-to-plant by many species of aphids and has a very wide host range among crops and weeds.
There is no cure and no chemical that kills a virus inside a plant, so management is prevention. Remove and destroy (do not compost) infected plants; for ToMV/TMV sanitize tools, use disease-free seed and resistant varieties, control weeds, and keep tobacco away from plants and hands; for CMV, insecticides do not stop transmission, so rely on removing infected plants, weed control, and reflective mulches. Recognizing mosaic symptoms
The hallmark is a mosaic. Both viruses produce alternating light and dark green (or yellow) patches, most visible on the younger leaves, and leaves may be malformed, cupped, or reduced to narrow shoestring or fern-leaf shapes. Plants are often stunted, lighter in color, and bushy, with greatly reduced fruit set and sometimes deformed, rugose, brown-spotted, or unevenly ripening fruit; NC State notes symptom severity depends on virus strain, plant variety, and temperature, which is why the same virus can look mild on one plant and severe on another.
That variability is exactly why mosaic is a diagnostic challenge. Herbicide drift (especially growth-regulator herbicides), nutrient issues, and physiological stress can all distort and discolor tomato leaves in ways that resemble a virus, and the mosaic viruses resemble each other. Two viruses, two very different ways of spreading
ToMV and TMV are the ultimate hitchhikers. NC State describes these tobamoviruses as highly stable and easily transmitted from contaminated transplants, seed, tools, grafts, and sap, and most commonly on the hands of workers; they survive in plant debris and can remain infectious for up to about two years. This is why simply handling an infected plant and then a healthy one, or smoking near plants, can spread them, and why hygiene is the center of control.
CMV plays a different game. UC IPM notes cucumber mosaic virus is spread plant-to-plant by many species of aphids in a non-persistent manner, the aphid carries it only minutes to a few hours and transmits it while probing and moving through the crop, not while settling to feed. CMV also has a very wide host range among crops and weeds, so nearby weedy reservoirs feed ongoing spread. That aphid-and-weed biology is why CMV control looks nothing like ToMV control.
Managing mosaic (prevention only)
No pesticide cures a virus, so the first move is removal: pull and destroy suspected plants promptly and do not compost them, since that can preserve stable viruses like TMV. Then prevent the next infection based on which virus you have.
For ToMV and TMV, sanitize tools between plants, use disease-free seed and resistant varieties (carrying Tm-1, Tm-2, or Tm-2 squared genes), control weeds, wash hands, and keep tobacco products away from plants and hands. For CMV, UC IPM cautions that insecticides against aphids are ineffective, because aphids transmit the virus faster than a spray can kill them, so control relies on removing infected plants, managing weeds that host the virus, and using reflective or metallic mulches to deter aphid landings; well-adapted resistant tomato varieties are largely unavailable. In both cases the realistic aim is protecting the rest of the planting and next season, not saving an already-infected plant.
