Peony Botrytis Blight: Diagnosing Bud Blast and Stem Rot

The short answer

Botrytis blight, caused by Botrytis paeoniae (and sometimes B. cinerea), is the most common disease of garden peonies and is worst in cool, damp, rainy spring weather. Its signature is bud blast: small buds turn black and wither, while larger buds turn brown and fail to open, and young shoots rot and wilt at ground level, often covered with a gray, fuzzy mold.

The fungus overwinters in plant debris left around the crown over winter and spreads by spores in spring that infect new shoots, buds, and flowers. Damp seasons and crowded, shaded, poorly drained plantings favor it.

Because it survives in debris, control is sanitation-first: cut the peony stalks to the ground in fall and remove and destroy all the debris (do not compost it), and in spring remove withered buds and blighted shoots promptly. Improve air circulation by spacing and dividing crowded clumps, avoid planting too deep, and keep water off the foliage; where the disease has a history, Extension notes fungicides can be applied as shoots emerge, per label. Recognizing peony botrytis blight

The disease often announces itself twice: at the ground and at the buds. Missouri Botanical Garden describes young shoots rotting off at ground level when they are five to eight inches tall, with a water-soaked, cankerous look, so the leafy shoots wilt suddenly and fall over. Just above the soil the stalk becomes coated with gray mold, the visible mass of fungal spores that gives Botrytis its common name, gray mold.

Higher on the plant, the damage lands on the flowers. Iowa State notes small buds that are affected turn black and wither, while larger buds turn brown and fail to open, and the withered buds later become covered with the same gray, fuzzy spores; leaves can also develop large, irregular dark brown blotches. The combination of blackened non-opening buds (bud blast) and gray-molded rotting stems in a cool wet spring is characteristic. Why cool wet springs trigger it

Botrytis is a moisture-and-cool-weather disease. Iowa State and Missouri Botanical Garden both note it is most common in cool, rainy weather and is very prevalent during damp, rainy seasons; the spores need free moisture and humidity to infect. That is why a peony can sail through one dry spring untouched and get hammered the next.

The reason it recurs on the same plants is where the fungus spends winter. Both Extensions state the fungus survives in debris left in the garden over winter, then produces spores in spring that infect the emerging shoots and buds. Old peony stalks and fallen leaves lying over the crown are the launch pad; a crowded, shaded clump that stays wet only makes conditions more favorable.

Preventing it with sanitation and airflow

The most important step is fall cleanup. Cut the peony stalks off at ground level in autumn and remove the plant debris from the garden and destroy it, Missouri Botanical Garden specifies destroying rather than composting, since the fungus survives in that material. Removing the overwintering source each year is what breaks the cycle, and it matters more than any spray.

In spring, act fast on any symptoms: remove withered flower buds, spent flowers, and blighted shoots as soon as you see them, so infected tissue is not feeding new spores. Improve conditions the fungus dislikes, space plants widely (at least about three feet apart), divide crowded clumps, plant in well-drained soil and not too deeply, move plants from shade into sun for better air circulation, and water the soil rather than the foliage.
