Boxwood Blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata)

The short answer

Boxwood blight, caused by the fungus Calonectria pseudonaviculata, shows up as dark leaf spots that quickly turn to browning and heavy leaf drop, usually starting on the lower branches and moving up the plant. Its most distinctive sign is numerous narrow black streaks (cankers) on the green stems, which separates it from most other boxwood troubles.

The disease does not attack the roots, so an established boxwood may push out new leaves and appear to partly recover, but the fungus survives in the fallen leaves and re-infects in following years. That persistence is why it is treated so seriously.

Because several boxwood problems look similar, and because control depends on getting it right, confirm a suspected case: compare against leafminer, Volutella, and winter injury below, and send a sample to your state plant diagnostic clinic before removing plants or making decisions.

How to identify boxwood blight

The disease has a recognizable progression. The University of Maryland Extension describes leaf spots followed by rapid browning and leaf drop starting on the lower branches and moving upward in the canopy.

The stems carry the key diagnostic sign. UMD states that a key symptom that differentiates boxwood blight from other boxwood diseases are numerous narrow cankers (black streaks) that develop on the green stems.

Illinois Extension emphasizes the same distinction from the defoliation angle: boxwood blight causes extensive defoliation, while look-alike disorders tend to have leaves turn tan to brown but remain attached to the plant. Under humid conditions, white tufts of fungal spores can appear on infected leaves and stems.

Distinguishing it from the look-alikes

Leaf drop is the first thing to weigh. Where boxwood blight defoliates rapidly, look-alike problems leave dead leaves clinging to the stems, so a plant that goes bare fast is more suspicious than one holding brown leaves.

Volutella blight is the closest disease mimic. Illinois Extension notes Volutella can produce distinct masses of pink to salmon-colored spores under moist conditions, whereas boxwood blight's spores are white, and UMD points to Volutella's salmon-pink fruiting bodies as the tell.

The other two common confusions are a pest and an environmental injury. Boxwood leafminer produces blister-like or pouch-shaped mines within the leaf (raised, off-green pouches), not stem streaks; winter injury turns foliage a uniform straw color, often with a distinct 'snow line' between healthy green below and damaged brown above, and it happens seemingly all at once rather than spreading.

โš  Do not rely on visual ID alone for a first case in your landscape. Illinois Extension notes a microscope is needed to confirm the disease diagnosis, and the black stem streaks are the single most useful field clue. When in doubt, submit a sample to your state Extension plant diagnostic lab before pulling out shrubs.

Sanitation and management

There is no spray that cures boxwood blight, so management is about removing inoculum and not spreading it. The University of Maryland Extension advises you to immediately bag and remove infected plants along with fallen leaves, because the fungus can remain viable in fallen leaves, which then serve as the source of infection for subsequent years.

Tools and clothing move the spores, so hygiene matters. UMD recommends you launder all clothing, gloves, and shoes, and sanitize gardening tools to avoid carrying inoculum to other sites, and cautions that fungicide treatments do not eradicate boxwood blight and must be repeated throughout the growing season.

For replanting or new plantings, choose resistant types. UMD cites disease-resistant cultivars such as the New Gen series, 'Green Beauty', and 'Nana'. Avoiding overhead watering, not shearing plants while wet, and inspecting any new boxwood before bringing it home all reduce the chance of introducing or spreading the disease.
