Controlling Bermudagrass Where You Don't Want It (Beds and Borders)

The short answer

Bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) is a prized warm-season lawn grass, but where it escapes into flower beds, borders, and other lawns it becomes one of the hardest weeds to remove. It spreads two ways at once: aboveground stolons (creeping surface runners) and belowground rhizomes, both of which root at the nodes to start new plants, so it encroaches steadily into anything nearby.

That dual spread, plus its ability to regenerate from fragments, is why it resists casual removal. Cultivating bermudagrass when the soil is moist actually spreads it, because tilling chops the stems into segments that each root and grow, which is how a quick rototill of an infested bed often makes things worse.

Non-chemical control is possible but demands persistence: where the area can be dried without harming nearby ornamentals, withhold water to desiccate the stems and rototill or spade the ground two or three times over summer; black polyethylene film that blocks sunlight can kill established plants; and geotextile landscape fabric under mulch works only if the sheets overlap so stolons cannot grow between them.

How to recognize it in the wrong place

Bermudagrass is a perennial warm-season grass that grows fast in warm, moist conditions and forms dense mats. The leaf blades are flat, flexible, and usually under about 2.3 inches long, and the seedhead has three to eight finger-like spikes radiating from the top of the stem, with flowers clustered along each spike from roughly June to September.

The features that make it a weed are the runners. It creeps outward on aboveground stolons and belowground rhizomes, both of which root at the nodes. In undisturbed soil the rhizomes usually sit shallow (1 to 6 inches), but they can go deeper than 6 inches where soil has been tilled deeply, in sandy soil, or against foundations and walls, which is why it is so hard to dig cleanly out of bed edges.

Why digging and tilling often backfire

The plant regenerates from pieces. Because its aggressive stolons and rhizomes root at every node, and fragments can regrow into whole new plants, manual removal that leaves bits behind simply reseeds the infestation with living runners. This makes selective removal from turf, gardens, and landscaped areas extremely difficult.

The classic mistake is tilling. Extension is explicit that cultivating bermudagrass when the soil is moist spreads it, because cultivation chops the stems into segments that root and become new plants. So a well-meant rototill through an infested bed can multiply the problem instead of solving it.

What actually works in beds

Commit to a persistent program rather than a single dig. Where the area can be dried out without injuring nearby ornamentals, withhold water to desiccate the stems, then rototill or spade the ground two or three times during the summer months, removing runners each pass. Exclude light on established patches with black polyethylene (plastic) film, which blocks the sunlight the grass needs.

To keep it out going forward, lay geotextile landscape fabric under mulch, overlapping the sheets so stolons cannot creep between them, since a single gap lets the runners through. Extension frames chemical control around non-selective options and repeated treatment rather than easy selective removal, because bermudagrass among desirable grasses or plants is very hard to target; follow the product label and county Extension guidance, as no rates are given here.
