De-Icing Salt Damage to Trees and Shrubs

The short answer

De-icing salts injure plants two ways. Salt spray thrown by passing traffic can travel a long distance from a road and pull water from conifer needles and deciduous buds, causing browning and bud death, usually worst on the side facing the road. Soil-borne salt washes in with melting snow and accumulates, where it binds water and creates drought-like conditions that roots cannot overcome.

Typical symptoms are scorched, brown needles or leaf margins, loss of buds and branches, witches' brooms of clustered growth, and dieback concentrated on the road-facing side. To reduce damage, plant sensitive species well back from salted roads and walks, choose salt-tolerant species for exposed spots, and use burlap barriers to block spray. Because salt injury can look like winter burn or disease, confirm with your local Extension office if the cause is unclear before treating.

  4. 4Reduce soil salt โ€” Where practical, redirect salty runoff away from beds; heavy spring watering can help leach salts from the root zone.
