How to Control Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua)
The short answer
Annual bluegrass (Poa annua) is a light-green, clumping grass that produces conspicuous whitish seedheads and stands out from surrounding turf. The best defense is a healthy, dense lawn: proper mowing height, watering, and fertilization make it hard for this weed to establish.
Small, young plants can be dug out before they establish, but large patches are difficult to dig and reseed. Because it sets seed prolifically, remove or disrupt plants before seedheads mature, and expect that thin or compacted turf will keep inviting it back.
How to identify it
Annual bluegrass is lighter green and coarser than most lawn grasses, forms clumps, and produces fuzzy whitish seedheads (often in spring) even when mowed low. Look for boat- or prow-shaped leaf tips and a membranous ligule to confirm.

Cultural and physical control
- 1Maintain dense turf — Keep the lawn healthy and dense with proper mowing height, irrigation, and fertilization, which is the best defense against annual bluegrass.
- 2Dig young plants — Dig out annual bluegrass while young and before it is well established; small plants come out easily.
- 3Reduce favorable conditions — Avoid overwatering and relieve compaction, since moist, compacted, thin turf favors this weed.
When to escalate
Large, established patches may be difficult to dig, and pre-emergence chemical options timed to germination can help. For chemical options consult your county Extension and always follow the label.
