Squash Vine Borer in the Garden

The short answer

Squash vine borer is a wasp-mimicking, day-flying moth whose larvae tunnel inside cucurbit stems, disrupting water flow so vines suddenly wilt and collapse. The most reliable defense is prevention: use floating row covers early in the season to keep moths from laying eggs, and practice sanitation and rotation, since a borer already inside the stem is hard to reach.

Scout for orange-red moths, wilting near the plant base, and sawdust-like frass at entrance holes on the lower stem. Squash (Cucurbita pepo types) are hit hardest; cucumbers and melons are poor hosts. Because covers must be removed at flowering for pollination, timing and monitoring matter.

How to identify it

Adults are day-flying moths with a roughly 1 to 1.5 inch wingspan, orange-red markings, a dark abdomen with black dots, and clear hind wings, so they resemble wasps in flight. The damaging stage is a larva inside the stem. Look for wilting vines, entrance holes near the base, and sawdust-like frass.

IPM least-toxic management

  1. 1Use row covers early โ€” Cover plants with floating row cover from the start of the season to block egg-laying, removing covers at bloom so pollinators can reach flowers.
  2. 2Scout for eggs and frass โ€” Check the base of stems for eggs, early wilting, and sawdust-like frass; catching infestations early gives the best outcome.
  3. 3Sanitation and rotation โ€” Remove and destroy infested vines after harvest and rotate cucurbit plantings to reduce carryover.
  4. 4Trap cropping โ€” A preferred trap crop such as Blue Hubbard squash can draw borers away from the main crop.

When to escalate
