Quince Rust: How It Differs from Cedar-Apple Rust, and How to Manage It
The short answer
Quince rust, caused by Gymnosporangium clavipes, is one of the cedar-apple-rust family of Gymnosporangium rusts but is distinct in what it attacks: the fruit and twigs of rose-family plants, hawthorn, quince, serviceberry, crabapple, and other pome fruits, rather than mainly the leaves. It swells, distorts, and often aborts the fruit and forms spindle-shaped twig cankers, while the leaves seldom show symptoms, which sets it apart from cedar-apple rust and its bright orange leaf spots.
On its alternate juniper or redcedar host, quince rust makes flaky, perennial swollen twig galls, not the round, golf-ball-like galls of cedar-apple rust, and these can stay infectious for several years, releasing reddish-orange jelly-like spore masses in spring. It has the widest host range of the cedar rusts.
Management separates the two host groups and removes inoculum: where practical avoid planting susceptible pome and rose-family trees near junipers and redcedars, prune out cankered twigs and juniper galls, and choose resistant varieties. Protective fungicides are applied to the rose-family host in spring, timed to when the orange spore masses appear on the junipers (around bud break through bloom), per Extension and label.
Symptoms on hawthorn, serviceberry, and quince
Quince rust concentrates on fruit and twigs, not leaves. Illinois and Iowa State Extension note it affects a wide range of rose-family plants, mountain ash, hawthorn, quince, flowering quince, serviceberry, crabapple, pear, and apple (apples are somewhat resistant), and that hawthorn and serviceberry fruit are often heavily covered with pinkish, cup- or tube-like structures (aecia) that release orange spores. Infected fruit are stunted, distorted, and frequently aborted, so a serviceberry or hawthorn can lose much of its crop.
Twig infections matter too. The fungus produces spindle-shaped, swollen, perennial cankers on twigs and branches that enlarge each year and can cause dieback. Because the leaves usually stay clean, a gardener seeing deformed, orange-spored fruit and swollen twigs, but healthy foliage, is almost certainly dealing with quince rust rather than cedar-apple rust. How it differs from cedar-apple rust
The clearest difference is on the juniper host. Illinois Extension notes that unlike cedar-apple rust's round galls, quince rust produces flaky perennial branch swellings on junipers and redcedars, elongated swellings rather than the distinct round, dimpled galls (which sprout the orange gelatinous horns) that cedar-apple rust makes. Quince rust swellings often girdle and kill small twigs and can remain infectious for several years, on the order of four to six years or more, whereas cedar-apple galls are essentially a one-time spring event.
The host and symptom focus differ as well. Cedar-apple rust makes bright orange spots on apple and crabapple leaves; quince rust largely spares leaves and instead hits fruit and twigs across the broadest host range of the cedar rusts. This is why quince rust deserves its own attention rather than being lumped with cedar-apple rust, the plants at risk (serviceberry, hawthorn, quince) and the part damaged (fruit and twigs) are different. Managing quince rust
Because the rust needs both a juniper and a rose-family host to complete its cycle, separating them is the foundational control. Where practical, avoid planting susceptible pome and rose-family trees near junipers and redcedars, and removing or separating nearby junipers reduces the spore pressure, though the spores can travel some distance. Prune out cankered twigs on the deciduous host and the gall-like swellings on junipers to cut down on inoculum, and remove infected fruit and twigs as sanitation.
Choose resistant varieties where available, and where a valued serviceberry, hawthorn, or quince keeps getting hit, protective fungicide sprays can shield new growth and fruit. Iowa State advises applying protective fungicides to the pomaceous host in spring, timed to when the orange spore masses appear on the junipers, roughly bud break through bloom, and continuing per label; use the timing and products your Extension specifies rather than any fixed dose. Fungicides protect healthy tissue but do not cure existing infections, so they work alongside host separation and sanitation, not instead of them.
