Hemlock Woolly Adelgid: Spot It and Decide

The short answer

Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is identified by the white, cottony wax the insects cover themselves with, found at the base of the needles on the undersides of twigs. Those little white woolly tufts along the twigs, most visible in late winter and spring, are the tell.

It is a serious pest, not a cosmetic one: a heavily infested hemlock may die within four years. So on a valued hemlock this is effectively a treat-or-lose decision rather than something to watch and ignore.

The effective treatment is systemic, using imidacloprid or dinotefuran applied by soil injection, soil drench, or basal trunk spray so the tree takes it up. These are restricted-use neonicotinoids that in some states cannot be applied by homeowners, so contacting an arborist is the recommended course.

Identify it: white wool at the base of the needles

The diagnosis is unusually clear-cut for a tree pest. The University of Maryland Extension explains that as the young adelgids grow, they cover themselves with a white woolly wax. The Alabama Cooperative Extension System locates it precisely: the woolly structures most often occur at the base and underside of the needles and on the twig itself, appearing as small round white cottony masses along the underside of the branches.

Look on the undersides of twigs where the needles attach, especially from late fall through spring when the wool is most obvious. The tufts look like tiny cotton balls or bits of white wool pressed against the twig. This is distinct from harmless white cottony masses elsewhere; on a hemlock, wool lined up at the needle bases means HWA, and it is worth confirming quickly because the timeline matters.

Treat or lose it: the stakes and the treatment

HWA can kill. Maryland Extension notes that a heavily infested tree may die within four years as the insects drain the tree and cause needle drop and dieback. That short runway is why finding the wool should prompt a decision rather than a wait-and-see, particularly for a specimen hemlock you want to keep.

The control that works is systemic. Extension guidance is that imidacloprid and dinotefuran are effective treatments, applied by soil injection, soil drench, or basal trunk spray so the insecticide is absorbed and moved through the tree's tissue. Note the timeline: a soil drench of imidacloprid may take a year or longer to take full effect, so treat before the tree is severely declined, and applications time best to spring or fall when soils are moist and the tree is taking up water.

When to call an arborist

For most homeowners, professional treatment is the realistic path, for two reasons. First, regulation: these products are neonicotinoids, which Maryland Extension notes cannot be applied by homeowners under the Maryland Pollinator Protection Act, and other states have their own restrictions on these active ingredients. Second, coverage: Extension advises that on large trees, tight clumps of trees, or where branches are inaccessible, spraying may not give adequate control, so contacting an arborist is recommended.

Escalate to a certified arborist when the hemlock is large, when trees are grouped so that reinfestation from neighbors is likely, or when you cannot legally or safely apply a systemic product yourself. An arborist can select and correctly apply a soil or trunk treatment, and advise on whether a heavily declined tree is worth saving. Do not simply spray the visible wool with a contact product and assume the problem is solved; the systemic treatment is what actually protects the tree.
