Viburnum Leaf Beetle

The short answer

If your viburnum's leaves are skeletonized to a lacy network in spring and then chewed into oblong holes in summer, the cause is viburnum leaf beetle, an invasive pest whose larvae and adults both feed only on viburnums.

Repeated heavy feeding over consecutive years can completely defoliate and kill susceptible shrubs, so it is worth managing rather than ignoring.

The most effective least-toxic control targets the overwintering eggs: from late summer the females lay eggs in small cavities along the twig tips, and these are easiest to see and prune out after the leaves drop, any time before the eggs hatch in early May.

Choosing resistant viburnum species and encouraging the beetle's natural predators rounds out an approach that avoids blanket spraying.

How to recognize the damage

The damage comes in two stages that both point to this one pest. The University of Maryland describes the larvae skeletonizing the underside of the leaves in spring, feeding between the veins so the leaf is reduced to a lacy skeleton.

Later the emerging adult beetles chew oblong holes in the leaves through summer, and high populations can completely defoliate a shrub.

Because the beetle feeds only on viburnums, seeing this pattern on a viburnum while nearby shrubs are untouched is itself a strong clue.

The life cycle that makes timing work

The beetle's year is what makes winter pruning so powerful. The University of Maryland reports that females lay eggs in cavities on the twigs in late summer and fall, capping each cavity so the eggs overwinter in the twig.

The larvae hatch in early May and begin skeletonizing new foliage, and the adult beetles emerge in July and are present through September, when they feed and lay the next round of eggs.

Because all the winter's eggs sit in the twig tips, removing those twigs while the shrub is dormant removes next year's population before it can hatch.

Dormant-season egg pruning: the core control

Pruning out the egg-laying sites is the single most effective and least-toxic tactic. The University of Maryland advises looking for the egg-laying sites on the twigs, pruning those twigs, and disposing of them, and notes the egg masses are easiest to find after the viburnums have dropped their leaves.

  1. 1Wait for leaf drop โ€” Inspect after the leaves fall, from late fall through winter and into early spring, when the capped egg rows on the young terminal twigs stand out against bare wood.
  2. 2Prune the egg-bearing twigs โ€” Cut off the twig tips that carry the rows of egg caps, staying ahead of the early-May hatch.
  3. 3Destroy what you cut โ€” Bag and discard or otherwise destroy the prunings away from the shrub so the eggs cannot hatch where they land.

โœ” There is a wide window here: anytime from leaf drop in fall until the eggs hatch in early May works, so this is a low-pressure winter chore rather than a race.

Resistant species and other help

Plant choice is a durable defense. The University of Maryland notes that American and European viburnums are vulnerable to severe damage and even death, while a number of species show resistance, including Koreanspice viburnum (Viburnum carlesii), Judd viburnum (V. x juddii), doublefile viburnum (V. plicatum), leatherleaf viburnum (V. rhytidophyllum), David viburnum (V. davidii), dawn viburnum (V. bodnantense), tea viburnum (V. setigerum), and Siebold viburnum (V. sieboldii).

Where susceptible viburnums are already established, combine winter egg pruning with tolerance of light feeding and protection of natural predators, reserving any insecticide for young larvae if a shrub is being repeatedly defoliated.
