Brown Rot of Stone Fruit: Sanitation and Spray Timing

The short answer

Brown rot affects stone fruits, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and apricots. It shows up as blossom blight (flowers wither, turn brown, and hang on the tree), then as small circular spots on ripening fruit that enlarge into fuzzy tan-to-gray spore masses, finally shriveling fruit into brown-black mummies. Those mummies, on the tree or ground, and infected twigs are where the fungus overwinters.

Sanitation is the core of control. Illinois Extension calls good sanitation probably the most important thing you can do: pick up and destroy all dropped and rotted fruit promptly, remove mummies from the tree, and during dormancy prune out infected twigs and cankers. This removes the inoculum that starts next spring's infection.

Cultural steps reduce pressure: prune to open the canopy for faster drying, thin fruit so mature fruits do not touch, and prevent insect and bird wounds that let the fungus in. If you use a fungicide, Extensions say to begin at bloom when flower buds show pink and continue through the season with products containing captan, myclobutanil, or propiconazole; fungicides protect, they do not cure.

Recognizing brown rot and its mummies

Brown rot works in two waves. Illinois Extension describes the first as blossom blight, where infected flowers wither, turn brown, and remain on the tree for an extended time, sometimes with sunken, gummy cankers where infected blossoms connect to twigs. The second and more familiar wave is fruit rot: small circular spots that enlarge or coalesce and produce tan to gray spore masses, giving the fruit a fuzzy appearance as it ripens.

Rotted fruit that stays attached dries into what growers call mummies. Illinois Extension notes diseased fruits turn brown to black and become shriveled, with some remaining on trees as mummies that are a major source of inoculum come spring. Iowa State adds that the fungus overwinters in mummies on the tree or the ground and in dead twig tissue, and that warm, wet weather during ripening drives rapid spread. Those two facts, spores from mummies plus warm wet weather, explain why a crop can rot almost overnight near harvest.

Sanitation first: remove every mummy

Because the fungus survives winter in mummies and infected wood, taking them out breaks the cycle. Illinois Extension is direct that good sanitation is probably the most important thing that can be done to manage brown rot: pick up all dropped and rotted fruit promptly and destroy or discard them, and remove mummies from the trees. Iowa State agrees that removing fruit, mummies, and dead twigs from trees after the final harvest reduces the amount of brown rot fungus for the next season.

Add dormant-season pruning to the sanitation program. Both Extensions advise pruning out infected twigs, blighted shoots, and cankers while the tree is dormant, which lowers the reservoir of inoculum before bloom. Doing this every year, rather than only in a bad year, is what keeps the disease in check on a backyard tree.

Airflow, thinning, and spray timing

Brown rot needs moisture, so anything that dries the canopy faster helps. Illinois Extension recommends opening up the canopy to increase airflow so it dries out faster, and thinning fruits so they will not touch when mature (touching fruit spreads rot contact-to-contact). If cultural steps are not enough in a wet year, a fungicide program can protect the crop. Illinois Extension says to begin spraying when flower buds begin to turn pink and continue through the growing season, using products containing captan, myclobutanil, or propiconazole, and stresses that fungicides will not cure brown rot but protect plant material from becoming infected. Utah State similarly describes a program beginning at bloom and continuing through the season. Follow the product label and your local Extension for exact intervals and pre-harvest limits, and never spray insecticides into open blossoms.
