Squash Bugs in the Garden

The short answer

Squash bugs are flat-backed, grayish-brown insects that pierce squash, pumpkin, and other cucurbit plants and suck sap, causing wilting that can kill young plants. The core of home control is scouting: check leaf undersides for their distinctive bronze egg clusters and crush the eggs, and hand-pick adults and nymphs.

Use a preventive IPM approach: trap bugs under boards laid near plants and collect them each morning, remove crop debris that shelters overwintering adults, and conserve natural enemies. Focus on early detection before populations build, since large infestations are much harder to manage.

How to identify it

Adults are flat-backed, grayish-brown, and roughly 5/8 inch long, with orange-to-brown striping along the abdomen edges. Nymphs are pale green when young, later with a dark thorax; some are dusted with a whitish powder. Shiny bronze to reddish-brown eggs are laid in neat groups on leaf undersides and stems.

IPM least-toxic management

  3. 3Sanitation โ€” Remove old vines and garden debris after harvest to eliminate overwintering shelter for adults.
  4. 4Conserve natural enemies โ€” Favor a scouting-first approach and protect beneficial insects rather than spraying broadly.

When to escalate
