Tomato Hornworms in the Garden

The short answer

Tomato hornworms are large green caterpillars, up to 3 to 4 inches long, with white side markings and a horn at the rear, that strip tomato foliage fast. In home gardens, hand-picking gives good control: inspect plants, look for dark droppings and stripped stems, and drop the caterpillars into soapy water.

Important exception: if a hornworm is covered with small white rice-like cocoons, leave it in place. Those are the pupae of a beneficial braconid wasp that parasitizes hornworms, and letting them mature helps control future generations.

How to identify it

The tomato hornworm is a large, pale-green caterpillar reaching about 3 to 4 inches when mature, with white V-shaped or diagonal side marks and a horn at the tail end. Signs include stripped upper foliage, chewed fruit, and dark pellet-like droppings on leaves below.

IPM least-toxic management

  1. 1Scout and hand-pick โ€” Look for droppings and defoliation, then hand-pick the caterpillars; hand-picking gives good control and is especially useful in small gardens.
  2. 2Leave parasitized hornworms โ€” If a hornworm carries white rice-like cocoons on its back, leave it; these are beneficial braconid wasp pupae that will help control future hornworms.
  3. 3Encourage beneficials โ€” Conserve natural parasitoids and predators rather than spraying broadly, so ongoing biological control continues.

โœ” White projections on a hornworm are parasitic wasp cocoons, not eggs of the pest. Leaving those hornworms in the garden conserves a natural control.

When to escalate

If hornworms are numerous and hand-picking cannot keep up, least-toxic microbial options in the Bt category target young caterpillars. For product options consult your county Extension and always follow the label.
