Neem Oil, Horticultural Oils, and Insecticidal Soap
The short answer
These least-toxic products all work in ways that shape how you should use them. Horticultural oils (refined petroleum or mineral oils) and insecticidal soaps (potassium salts of fatty acids) kill mainly by contact, smothering soft-bodied pests like aphids, young scales and whiteflies, and spider mites. Neem oil is a botanical from neem seeds; besides some contact effect, its compound azadirachtin acts as an insect antifeedant and growth disruptor, so it is most useful against developing stages.
The big limitation is that these products largely kill only the pests present and coated when you spray. They have little effect once dry, so thorough coverage, including leaf undersides, is essential, and repeat applications are usually needed. They are not systemic and are not a one-and-done fix. Always match the product to the pest and plant, and follow the label for rates, timing, and temperature or plant-sensitivity precautions; this page gives no rates because the label is the legal, plant-specific guide.
How each one works
- Horticultural oils: smother pests on contact; useful against scales, young whiteflies, and spider mites; no effect after they dry
- Insecticidal soaps (fatty-acid salts): contact killers of many soft-bodied pests and spider mites
- Neem oil: contains azadirachtin, which acts as an antifeedant and insect growth disruptor, plus some contact effect on developing insects
What they can't do
- They kill mostly the pests present and covered on the day you spray
- Complete coverage of the insect is required, so spray leaf undersides and hidden areas
- They are not systemic and have little residual effect once dry, so repeat applications are usually needed
Use them wisely
Correctly identify the pest and confirm the product is labeled for that pest and plant. Because oils and soaps can injure some plants under heat or drought stress, and because rates and precautions vary by product, follow the label exactly. This page intentionally gives no mixing rates; the product label is the authoritative, legally binding source.
