How to Water Houseplants Without Killing Them
The short answer
Don't water houseplants on a fixed schedule โ check the soil first. Push a finger about 1-2 inches into the pot; water only when it feels dry at that depth, then water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes and empty the saucer. Most houseplants are killed by too much water, not too little.
When leaves yellow, the tell is texture: overwatered plants have soft, limp, yellow leaves and a mushy stem base (and sometimes mold on the soil), while underwatered plants have dry, crispy leaves and bone-dry soil that pulls from the pot's edge.
How to water
- 1Check the soil, not the calendar โ Finger 1-2 inches down; water only if it's dry there. A wooden chopstick or a moisture meter works too.
- 2Water thoroughly โ Water until it drains from the bottom โ this wets the whole root ball and flushes salts.
- 3Never leave it sitting in water โ Empty the saucer; roots left in standing water rot.
Over- vs under-watered (both can yellow leaves)
- Overwatered: soft, limp, uniformly yellowing leaves (often lower ones first), mushy stem base, possibly green/white mold or algae on the soil surface, soil stays wet.
- Underwatered: dry, brown, crispy leaf edges, wilting that perks up after watering, soil bone-dry and shrinking from the pot sides.
โ A mushy, rotten-smelling base and constantly-wet soil mean root rot from overwatering โ let it dry out, and repot into fresh mix with drainage if it's severe.
What changes it
Bright light, warmth, and small pots dry out faster (water more often); low light, cool rooms, and big pots stay wet longer (water less). Always use a pot with a drainage hole.
