What Is the White Crust on My Houseplant Soil and Pots?

The short answer

A hard, crusty white deposit on the soil surface, in the saucer, or on the outside of a porous clay pot is salt buildup from excess fertilizer and minerals in tap water - it's a chemical crust, not a living mold. Iowa State notes these salts can damage roots and in extreme cases show as this visible crust.

Fix it by easing off fertilizer, flushing the pot with plain water until it runs freely from the drainage holes (leaching), and scraping off the crusted surface soil and replacing it with fresh mix. If a soft, fuzzy growth appears instead, that's a different issue (harmless soil mold), not salts.

What the crust is

The white crust is accumulated mineral salts. Iowa State Extension explains that salt built up from excess fertilizer can damage roots and, in extreme cases, can be seen as a crust on the soil surface, in saucers, or on the outside of porous clay containers. Tap water minerals add to the buildup over time.

It's worth telling this apart from mold: a hard, crystalline, off-white crust is salts, while a soft, fuzzy, cottony growth is a saprophytic mold living on organic matter. This page is about the salt crust; the two are handled differently.

Why it matters

Salt buildup isn't just cosmetic. The same excess salts that form the crust can damage roots, and they're a common cause of brown leaf tips and edges as the plant struggles to take up water against the salt concentration.

It usually means a combination of over-fertilizing and not enough plain-water flushing, sometimes made worse by hard tap water and pots that don't drain freely.

How to fix it

Leach the pot: take the plant to a sink, pour plain water through the soil until it runs freely from the drainage holes, let it drain, and repeat a couple of times to wash salts out. Do this every few months if you fertilize regularly.

Scrape off the crusted surface layer and any salt on the rim, and replace it with fresh potting mix. Then cut back on fertilizer - feed at the dilute rate the label gives and mainly during the growing season - and make sure the pot drains freely so salts don't concentrate.
