How-to Guide
Peace Lily: Care, Why It Droops, and How to Get Blooms
The short answer
Keep a peace lily (Spathiphyllum) in bright indirect light โ it tolerates low light but grows and flowers best with more โ and keep the soil moist but not soggy, allowed to dry only slightly between waterings, per Clemson Extension. Never let the pot stand in excess water, which causes root rot.
The dramatic all-at-once droop is a drought signal: when the soil dries out too much, the plant wilts and leaf edges yellow. It usually recovers after a thorough watering. If yours never blooms, Clemson says that typically means the plant is under a year old or is not receiving enough light.
What a Peace Lily Is
The peace lily is a tropical aroid, not a true lily, producing lightly fragrant white flowers that resemble calla lilies and fade to pale green as they age. It flourishes in almost any well-drained potting mix and is one of the most tolerant flowering houseplants.
Light
Peace lilies tolerate low light but grow best in bright indirect light. Keep them out of direct sun, which scorches the foliage.
Watering
Keep soil moist but not soggy, letting it dry out only slightly between waterings, and use room temperature water. Never leave the plant sitting in drained water.
Brown leaf edges and tips come from overfertilization or excessive drying, so this is a plant to keep on the moist side of the houseplant spectrum โ with drainage doing the overflow protection.
โ Sitting in excess water causes root rot. Water thoroughly, then empty the saucer.
Why It Droops
Drooping is nearly always drought: when the soil dries out too much, the plant wilts and leaves and edges turn yellow. Water deeply and it typically rebounds within hours. Repeated collapse cycles cost leaves, so aim to water just before the droop.
Temperature and Humidity
- Warm days of 68 to 85 F, nights about 10 F cooler.
- Avoid temperatures below 60 F.
- Keep away from heating and air-conditioning vents and drafts.
Getting Flowers
No blooms usually means one of two things per Clemson: the plant is less than one year old, or it is receiving insufficient light. Move a bloom-shy plant into brighter indirect light and give it time.
Problems and Pet Safety
- Fungus gnats, mealybugs, spider mites, and scales.
- Root and stem diseases from overwatering.
- Brown tips: overfertilization or drought stress.
โ Clemson notes calcium oxalate crystals in the plant cells can cause toxicity in pets and children if consumed, most commonly burning of the mouth, throat, and tongue. Check the ASPCA plant list and keep peace lilies away from chewing pets.
