Norfolk Island Pine Care

The short answer

The living Christmas tree in the foil-wrapped pot is Araucaria heterophylla, a South Pacific conifer that is not a true pine and, per Purdue Extension, far too tender to plant outdoors in cold-winter climates. It lives as a houseplant, and can live for decades as one.

Its needs, per Iowa State and Purdue Extension: a brightly lit spot near an east, west, or south window (a couple of hours of direct sun is ideal), a weekly quarter-turn so it grows straight, watering when the top inch of soil feels dry with the excess drained off, and temperatures roughly in the 55 to 70 degree Fahrenheit range.

The make-or-break factor is humidity. Purdue notes it wants around 50 percent relative humidity while heated winter homes can drop to 15 percent, and that dry air, dim light, and drought all brown the lower branches. Know this before you buy: lower branches that brown and drop are permanent losses; the tree does not regrow them, so prevention is the only cure.

Not a pine, not hardy

Araucaria heterophylla comes from Norfolk Island in the South Pacific and can reach 200 feet in habitat (Purdue). It is unrelated to true pines, and it will not survive frost, so in most of North America it is a houseplant year-round. Purdue calls it far too tender to plant outdoors in Midwest-type climates; enjoy it as a decorated living tree in December and as a soft-needled evergreen houseplant the other eleven months.

Light, water, temperature

Iowa State recommends a brightly lit location near an east, west, or south window, and Purdue says it does best with a couple of hours of direct sun daily. Both flag the same quirk: the tree leans toward its light source, so rotate the pot weekly (Iowa State) to keep it growing straight and symmetrical.

Water when the surface inch of the potting mix feels dry, thoroughly enough that water runs from the drainage holes, then discard the excess (Purdue says pour off what remains after about 15 minutes). Iowa State warns against letting the soil go excessively dry, and Purdue warns both extremes cause widespread browning; this is a plant for the moderate middle. See watering-houseplants.

Keep it on the cool side of comfortable: Iowa State suggests 55 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and Purdue 60 to 70 degrees with slightly cooler nights. Keep it away from heat vents and cold drafts. Feed lightly with dilute fertilizer every 2 to 4 weeks from spring through early fall (Iowa State).

Browning lower branches: prevention only, no cure

Some slow browning of the lowest, oldest branches is normal aging (Purdue). But faster or widespread browning means a problem: Iowa State attributes browning branch tips and loss of lower branches to low relative humidity, insufficient light, or excessively dry soil, and Purdue adds overwatering and drafts to the suspect list.

The hard truth: needles and branches the tree drops are not replaced. The damage is permanent, and a Norfolk Island pine that loses its lower third stays gap-toothed for life. That makes humidity and light maintenance, not rescue pruning, the whole game.

Humidity is the winter battleground. Purdue's target is about 50 percent relative humidity against heated-home reality of 15 percent, and both Extensions endorse a humidifier as the most effective fix, with a pebble tray as the low-effort fallback. As a Christmas tree

Purdue happily endorses it as a terrific living Christmas tree; its soft-needled tiers take lightweight ornaments well. Just keep the holiday placement plant-legal: away from heat vents, fireplaces, and unlit corners, and don't let the decorative foil pot-wrap trap drainage water around the roots; punch a hole in it or remove it at watering time.

Long-term, remember it is a tree. It grows slowly indoors but steadily, and will eventually test your ceiling; there is no way to shorten it without ruining its shape, so buy the size that suits the space.
