Growing Vegetables in Containers
The short answer
Many vegetables grow well in containers on a balcony, patio, or sunny windowsill. Match pot size to the crop: about ten-inch pots suit herbs, parsley, and green onions, while deep-rooted crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant need roughly five-gallon containers, and most vegetables want at least twelve inches of soil depth.
Sun matters most for yield. Fruiting vegetables such as tomatoes, beans, and peppers need six to eight hours of direct sun daily, while leafy and root crops like lettuce, beets, and greens tolerate some light shade. Containers dry out fast and may need watering once or even twice a day in hot, sunny spots.
Choosing pot size
- About 10-inch pots: herbs, parsley, green onions
- About 5-gallon containers: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant
- At least 12 inches of soil depth for most vegetables
Sun and water
Give fruiting crops six to eight hours of direct sun; leafy and root crops accept some shade. Because containers hold limited soil, check moisture often and water more than you would in-ground plants.
⚠ Filled large containers are heavy; on a balcony, consider the structure's load limits before placing several big pots.
