Air Plant (Tillandsia) Care

The short answer

Tillandsias are epiphytes with only anchoring roots; they take up water and nutrients through their leaves, so they don't grow in soil. Wisconsin Horticulture is explicit that in the dry air of most homes they dehydrate, need more frequent watering than tank bromeliads, and that misting alone is not adequate.

The reliable method is to soak or dunk the whole plant in water, then shake off the excess and set it upside down to dry in bright, airy conditions. Minnesota Extension warns that Tillandsia crowns rot if the plant is not well-drained after watering, which is exactly why you dry them upside down.

Give them bright, indirect light and good air circulation, and treat any silvery fuzz on the leaves as their moisture-absorbing scales, not dust.

How they drink: soak, then dry

Air plants absorb water through fuzzy scales on their leaves, not through roots. Because home air is dry, Wisconsin Horticulture notes they dehydrate easily and need more frequent watering than other bromeliads, adding plainly that misting is not adequate.

The practical routine most growers use is a soak or dunk: submerge the whole plant in room-temperature water, then lift it out and shake off the water clinging in the leaf bases. The exact interval depends on how dry and warm your home is rather than a fixed number, so watch the plant: curling or exaggerated leaf channels signal thirst.

Drying upside down is the step people skip

After watering, invert the plant and let it dry within a few hours in bright light with air moving around it. Minnesota Extension warns that Tillandsia crowns rot if not well-drained after watering, and standing water pooled in the center of the rosette is the most common way to kill one.

Never leave an air plant sitting in a closed terrarium or a decorative shell full of water. If it is mounted on wood, make sure air can circulate all around it so it dries fully between waterings.

Light and humidity

Wisconsin Horticulture places air plants in bright light and prefers relative humidity of about 50 to 75 percent. Bright, filtered light from an east, west, or south window works well; deep shade weakens them.
