How to Revive a Dying Houseplant
The short answer
Diagnose before you treat, and diagnose in this order: water, light, roots, pests, humidity. The order matters because watering problems are the most common cause of houseplant decline and because the visible symptoms overlap; Iowa State Extension notes that roots sitting in wet soil develop root rot, which causes wilting, which tempts you to water more, the classic death spiral.
Start with the finger test: push a finger an inch or two into the soil. Wet soil plus a wilted plant points to root rot, not thirst; bone-dry soil that has pulled from the pot sides points to drought. Then judge light: spindly, stretched, pale growth suggests too little; bleached or scorched patches suggest too much (University of Maryland Extension).
Then do the step most people skip: unpot the plant. Maryland's guidance is to pull the plant out of the pot and look at the roots: healthy roots are light-colored and firm, diseased roots are dark and soft. Firm roots mean the top can be rebuilt; mostly mushy roots mean the plant may not be salvageable, and Maryland says severely damaged plants (extensive root rot, heavy pest damage, viruses) should be discarded rather than nursed.
Step 1: Read the water situation with your finger, not the calendar
Check the soil before touching anything else, because both watering extremes produce drooping, off-color plants. Iowa State's diagnostic guidance for overwatering lists yellowing or browning leaves, leaf drop, wilting from damaged roots, and fungus gnats, and its correction is a wet-dry cycle: water only when the soil is dry an inch or two down, thoroughly, in a pot that drains.
If the soil is wet and the plant is limp, do not water again; that combination is the signature of roots that have stopped working. If the soil is dust-dry and shrunken from the pot walls, water may run straight through without soaking in; bottom-water or water slowly in stages until the root ball rehydrates. Step 2: Judge the light honestly
Maryland's diagnostic pairs are useful here: insufficient light produces spindly, stretched, weak growth (and is a common backstory to overwatering, since dim plants use little water), while excessive light bleaches or scorches foliage. Compare where the plant sits with what its species wants; a surprising number of dying houseplants are simply low-light survivors being asked to live in a dark hallway, or shade plants roasting in a west window.
Light fixes are slow fixes. Moving the plant is instant, but visible recovery takes weeks of new growth, so improve the position and be patient rather than layering on fertilizer, which stressed roots cannot use and Iowa State notes can itself cause browning, leaf drop, and wilting via salt buildup.
Step 3: Unpot it and read the roots
This is the decisive test, and it cannot be done from the outside. Slide the plant out of its pot and look: per Maryland Extension, healthy roots are light-colored and firm; diseased roots are dark and soft. Maryland's root-rot guidance for indoor plants describes infected roots and lower stems turning brown, black, or mushy and collapsing.
If you find mostly firm roots with some rot: trim the dead roots and any soggy soil away, repot into a clean pot with fresh, well-draining mix (Maryland's root-rot management stresses clean pots, sterile media, and avoiding excess water), and water sparingly while it recovers. If nearly all roots are brown and mushy and the stem base is soft, recovery is unlikely. It is reasonable to take a healthy cutting if any firm stem remains (see how-to-take-cuttings) and let the original go.
Step 4: Pests, then humidity and salts
With water, light, and roots ruled out, inspect for pests with good light and, ideally, a hand lens: leaf undersides, stem joints, and new growth. Maryland links yellowing foliage to aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs among other causes; sticky residue suggests scale or aphids, fine webbing suggests spider mites. Dry indoor air browns leaf tips and edges on humidity-loving plants (see how-to-increase-humidity-for-houseplants), and a white crust on the soil or pot rim signals fertilizer salt buildup, for which Iowa State recommends flushing the soil thoroughly with water and cutting fertilizer strength to half or quarter.
When to give up
A plant is worth the fight when it still has firm roots, a firm stem base, or healthy growing tips; any one of those can rebuild the rest. Maryland's line for the other cases is blunt: severely damaged plants should be discarded, specifically those with extensive root rot, overwhelming pest damage, or viral infection, for which there is no effective treatment.
Discarding is not failure; it is pest and disease control for the rest of your collection, and the pot is reusable after a good scrub. Note the lesson the autopsy taught (usually: smaller pot, brighter spot, or less water) and apply it to the replacement.
One honesty note: symptoms overlap, and even Extension diagnostics speak in likelihoods rather than certainties. If two explanations fit, correct the watering first; it is the most common cause and the cheapest experiment.
