How to Overseed Your Lawn (Cool-Season Grass)
The short answer
For cool-season grasses, the best time to overseed a thin lawn is late summer to early fall โ roughly mid-August to mid-September in the north. The soil is still warm so seed germinates fast, cooler nights push growth, and weeds compete less. Aim for at least six weeks before your first hard frost.
Before you reseed a bare patch, figure out WHY it's bare โ heavy traffic, pet urine, deep shade, poor drainage, or grubs. If you don't fix the cause, the new grass fails the same way.
How to overseed
- 1Mow short and clear debris โ Cut the lawn a bit shorter than usual and rake off clippings and thatch so seed reaches soil.
- 2Open the soil surface โ Rake bare spots or core-aerate larger areas for good seed-to-soil contact.
- 3Spread seed โ Use a grass seed suited to your region and sun/shade; follow the bag's seeding rate.
- 4Keep it moist โ Water lightly 2-4 times a day to keep the top inch damp until seedlings establish, then taper off to deeper, less frequent watering.
Fix the cause of bare spots first
- Compaction / heavy traffic โ aerate, or add a path/stepping stones.
- Deep shade โ grass may never thrive; consider a shade-tolerant seed mix or a groundcover/mulch instead.
- Pet urine, standing water, or grubs โ address the source before reseeding.
โ Spring overseeding is possible but harder โ heat and weeds arrive before the new grass is strong, so fall is the reliable window for cool-season lawns.
