What Is Thatch in a Lawn (and Is It Bad)?

The short answer

Thatch is an organic layer, not a pile of clippings. Penn State Extension defines it as a loose, intermingled layer of dead and living shoots, stems, and roots that develops between the green vegetation and the soil surface. A modest amount is normal in any lawn.

A thin layer is fine, even helpful. Penn State notes half an inch or less provides beneficial insulation and a cushioned surface, and problems generally start once the lawn has more than about an inch of thatch, which can block water, air, and fertilizer from reaching the soil and harbor pests and disease. So the question is not whether you have thatch, but how thick it is.

The most persistent myth is that leaving clippings causes thatch. It does not: grass clippings are mostly water and break down quickly, and Penn State says they usually do not contribute to thatch buildup. Real causes are thatch-prone grasses, acidic soil, heavy nitrogen fertilization, and pesticides that reduce the earthworms and microbes that decompose thatch.

How much thatch is too much

Measure before you worry. Cut a small wedge from the lawn and look at the brown, spongy layer between the green blades and the soil. Penn State's guidance is that half an inch or less is beneficial, providing insulation and a cushioned surface, while more than about an inch of thatch is where turf problems become likely, because a thick mat sheds water and fertilizer, keeps roots shallow, and holds moisture that favors disease and insects.

What actually causes thatch (it is not clippings)

Thatch builds up when grass produces organic matter faster than soil life can break it down. Penn State points to four main drivers: aggressive thatch-producing grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, creeping red fescue, and creeping bentgrass; acid soils (around pH 5.5 or lower) that inhibit the decomposing microorganisms; certain fungicides and insecticides that reduce earthworm populations; and heavy nitrogen fertilization, which pushes lush growth and more stem and root tissue.

Grass clippings are conspicuously absent from that list. Because clippings are mostly water and easily degraded, they usually do not add to thatch, and Penn State notes that although some clippings end up in the thatch layer, soil organisms break them down. In short, mulching your clippings back into the lawn is not what creates a thatch problem.

  • Thatch-producing grasses: Kentucky bluegrass, creeping red fescue, creeping bentgrass.
  • Acid soil (about pH 5.5 or lower): slows the microbes that decompose thatch.
  • Heavy nitrogen fertilization: drives excess stem and root tissue.
  • Pesticides that harm earthworms: fewer earthworms means slower thatch breakdown.
  • Not a cause: grass clippings, which break down within weeks.

โ†’ If you have a thick thatch layer, address the causes too, not just the symptom: correct low soil pH, avoid over-fertilizing with nitrogen, and let earthworms and microbes work. Dethatching a lawn while leaving the causes in place just resets the clock.
