Fertilizer Burn: Fix It and Prevent It
The short answer
Fertilizer burn is osmotic salt injury. Most fertilizers are soluble salts, and when too much lands in one place the salts draw water out of root tissue instead of letting roots absorb it. On lawns it shows as browned turf that resembles drought stress, concentrated where fertilizer was over-applied, overlapped, or spilled, usually within days of application. On vegetables and ornamentals it shows as browning leaf edges (marginal leaf scorch), marginal yellowing, wilting, and stunting. Damage is most severe in hot, dry weather, when salts are already concentrated in dry soil.
The fix is dilution. Maryland Extension's remedy for lawns: soak the affected area with 1-inch applications of water, repeated two or three times, to leach excess salts down below the root zone. Do the same around burned garden plants. Turf whose crowns survived will regrow; areas that stay straw-dead after a few weeks of recovery need reseeding, and badly scorched leaves on garden plants will not green back even though the plant can push new growth.
Prevention is unglamorous and total: measure the area, follow the label rate exactly, fill spreaders on pavement so spills miss the lawn, water granular fertilizer in immediately, sweep granules off foliage, and prefer slow-release or organic sources, which Maryland Extension notes are far less likely to burn.
Recognize it
The diagnostic pattern is cause-and-effect: damage appears within days of fertilizing, and it maps to where the fertilizer went, at overlap strips, turnarounds, spill spots, or an entire over-dosed bed. Lawn symptoms usually resemble drought stress, which is exactly the mechanism, since roots are being osmotically drought-stressed by salt. On garden plants look for browning leaf margins and scorch working inward, with older leaves usually worst.
It could instead be actual drought, dog urine (same salt mechanism, different source, green-rimmed patches), or disease; if you did not fertilize recently, work through the yellow-lawn diagnostic before assuming burn.
Fix it: flush the salts
- 1Water heavily, then repeat โ Apply about 1 inch of water to the affected area, and repeat two or three times over the following days so the salts leach below the root zone. Slow, deep soaking beats one flood that runs off.
- 2Remove what you can โ If granules are still visible on the surface or foliage (a spill), scoop and sweep up as much as possible before flushing.
- 3Wait and reassess โ Give turf a few weeks of normal care. Crowns that survived push new green; patches that stay straw-colored and lifeless are dead.
- 4Repair โ Rake out dead turf and reseed or patch-sod; prune scorched dead leaf tissue from garden plants once new growth shows the plant's real recovery.
Prevent the next one
- Follow the label rate; it is a legal document and the entire safety margin. Measure your actual square footage rather than guessing.
- Water the lawn thoroughly after fertilizing to wash granules off blades and carry salts into the soil at diluted strength.
- Sweep or brush granular fertilizer off leaves and out of plant whorls before watering in.
- Prefer slow-release nitrogen and organic fertilizers; Maryland Extension recommends them specifically to prevent burn, along with building soil with 1-2 inches of compost yearly in gardens.
- Never fertilize drought-stressed plants or hot dry soil; salts are already concentrated there, and burn risk is at its peak.
- Fill and park spreaders on a hard surface, close the hopper before crossing the lawn, and overlap wheel tracks, not spread swaths.
- Base rates on a soil test through your county Extension office instead of habit; unneeded fertilizer is both the burn risk and the wasted money.
