Why Isn't My Lawn Green? (Nitrogen vs Iron vs Water)
The short answer
If your grass is uniformly pale or yellowish but still alive, the two most common causes are nitrogen deficiency and iron deficiency, and telling them apart is the whole job. Extension guidance is that nitrogen shortage shows up first on the older, lower leaves and gives an overall light-green to yellow cast, whereas iron shortage appears first in the newest growth, with the young leaves pale but keeping narrow dark-green veins.
Getting the diagnosis right matters because the fixes differ. Treating an iron deficiency with nitrogen tends to make things worse rather than masking it, so you should not just throw fertilizer at a yellow lawn and hope. The recommended approach is to test: apply a small amount of nitrogen to one small area and watch for a response, or apply only an iron source if you suspect iron.
Not every pale lawn is a nutrient problem, so rule out the simple causes too. Mowing too short, drought stress, compacted soil, and a dull mower blade that shreds the tips can all leave grass looking off-color even when it is fed. Check your mowing height, watering, and blade sharpness before assuming a deficiency.
Nitrogen or iron? Read the pattern
Start with which leaves are affected. According to Arizona turf guidance, nitrogen deficiency is seen first on the older, lower leaves, which lose color and turn light green to yellow while newer leaves stay greener; the overall look is a uniform fade. Iron deficiency is the reverse: it appears first in the young leaves at the tips of new growth, which turn pale but keep contrasting narrow dark-green veins, a pattern called interveinal chlorosis.
Iron problems are more common on high-pH (alkaline) soils, where iron is present but not available to the plant. Because the two deficiencies point to different treatments, this pattern check is worth doing carefully before you buy anything.
Test before you treat
The most important caution is that nitrogen will not fix, and can worsen, an iron deficiency. So rather than blanket-feeding a yellow lawn, treat a small test area first: if you suspect nitrogen, apply a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer to one patch and see if it greens up; if you suspect iron, apply only an iron source to a test patch and watch the response.
A soil test through your county Extension office removes the guesswork on pH and nutrients and is the surest way to know which way to go. This matters most on alkaline soils, where repeatedly adding nitrogen to a lawn that actually needs iron just leaves you frustrated.
Rule out the non-nutrient causes

- Dull mower blade: a torn, frayed leaf tip turns whitish-tan and makes the whole lawn look grayish; sharpen the blade.
- Compaction or shade: thin, weak grass in compacted or shaded ground looks pale regardless of feeding.
