How to Set Up Drip Irrigation in a Home Garden
The short answer
A home drip system is just a chain: faucet, then a filter and a pressure regulator, then a mainline hose to the garden, then lateral tubing running down each bed or row with emitters that drip at each plant. The reason for the filter and regulator is that most drip emitters are designed to run at low pressure โ around 10 psi โ while a household faucet delivers roughly 25 to 35 psi, so you reduce the pressure and screen out grit that would clog the tiny openings.
Buy a starter kit or the parts separately, lay it out on the soil surface near the plants (not buried), do a trial run, and walk the whole line to confirm every plant is actually getting water before you set it and forget it. The most common mistakes are skipping the filter or pressure reducer, running the mainline too long, and adding more emitters than the pressure can supply.
Parts you need at the faucet
- A filter, commonly a 100-mesh screen, to keep sediment from clogging emitters.
- A pressure regulator or gate valve to bring household pressure down toward the ~10 psi that drip emitters are built for.
- A backflow preventer where required by local code, plus a timer if you want automatic watering.
Build the system, step by step
- 1Run the mainline โ Connect poly tubing or a hose from the faucet fittings out to the garden. Keep runs reasonably short โ overly long mainlines lose pressure.
- 2Lay laterals down each row or bed โ Branch smaller supply tubing off the mainline so a line runs past each row of plants, capping the far end.
- 3Add emitters at the plants โ Use the punch tool from the kit to insert emitters into the lateral tubing at each plant. In-line emitters commonly run 0.5โ2 gph and spot emitters 0.5โ4 gph; adjustable heads let you twist to the drip you want.
- 4Flush and test โ Run the system, check that each emitter drips, and adjust or add emitters where coverage is thin. Uncap and flush the lines periodically.
โ Don't overload one line with emitters โ too many drippers on a run starves the ones at the end. Split the garden into zones if you have a lot of plants.
