Railroad Ties in the Garden: The Creosote Problem

The short answer

Skip them, especially anywhere you grow food. Railroad ties are preserved with creosote, which the EPA classifies as a restricted-use pesticide applied only by certified applicators, approved for commercial uses like rail ties and utility poles, with no registered residential uses. Extension services are blunt about the garden application: Oregon State University Extension says using old railroad ties for garden boxes or beds is not recommended, because industrial wood preservatives are not intended for garden or residential use.

The practical concerns are creosote leaching into adjacent soil and oily residue transferring on skin contact, neither of which you want next to carrots or a child's play area. If you inherit ties in an ornamental landscape, the highest-risk moves are cutting, sanding, and above all burning them, which the EPA specifically warns against. For raised beds, use untreated rot-resistant lumber, modern residential pressure-treated wood, metal, or masonry instead.

What's actually in a railroad tie

Creosote is a coal-tar-derived preservative forced into wood under pressure at industrial treatment plants. The EPA is explicit about its status: it is a restricted-use pesticide, applied with high-pressure equipment in wood-preserving facilities by certified pesticide applicators only, it is not available to homeowners, and it currently has no registered residential uses; it is used for commercial purposes only, such as railroad ties and utility poles.

Old ties reach gardens through salvage and landscape-supply yards, and reuse of already-treated wood is not itself regulated by EPA pesticide law, which is why they are legal to sell in many places. Legal to sell is not the same as sensible around food: the preservative was chosen to keep wood from rotting in ground contact for decades, and old ties can continue to release it, especially when they weep in hot weather.

Why not vegetable beds specifically

Two exposure paths matter in a garden. First, leaching: creosote components (including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) can migrate from the wood into the soil immediately around it, which is exactly the soil your bed's roots occupy when ties form the walls. Second, contact: sitting, kneeling, and handling can transfer residue to skin, and a bed edge is a natural bench and grab-rail.

Because there is no registered residential use, there is also no residential-use safety standard to lean on; the wood was never evaluated for growing food against it. Extension guidance therefore defaults to the simple rule: choose materials rated for residential use for beds, and keep industrial wood out of them. Already have ties in the garden?

There is no need to panic over ties in a purely ornamental setting; the main risks concentrate close to the wood and with direct contact. Sensible mitigations: don't grow edibles against them, don't let children use them as seats or balance beams, wear gloves when handling, and don't cut, sand, or drill them without dust protection.

For food beds bordered by old ties, the clean fix is replacement. If you remove them, dispose of them through your municipal solid-waste route rather than reusing them elsewhere; and if you are concerned about soil that sat against ties for years, a laboratory soil test (many extension services offer PAH screening referrals) settles it, or simply relocate the food bed.

โš  Never burn railroad ties or any preservative-treated wood, in a fire pit, stove, or burn pile. The EPA warns the smoke and ash contain toxic chemicals; disposal goes through your solid-waste facility, not your fireplace.

Better materials for beds and edging

For raised beds: untreated rot-resistant lumber (cedar, larch, oak), modern residential-rated pressure-treated lumber, galvanized or corten steel beds, brick, block, or stone. Untreated softwood works too if you accept replacing boards every handful of years; it is often the cheapest per season of use.
