Rain Barrels: Setup and Safe Use on Edible Gardens
The short answer
A rain barrel is a covered container fitted under a downspout to capture roof runoff, with a spigot at the base for filling watering cans or feeding drip lines. For trees, shrubs, lawns, and flower beds, collected rainwater is an easy win. The complication is edibles: extension testing has found rain-barrel water can carry pathogens (birds and squirrels defecate on roofs, and the bacteria thrive in warm standing water) and sometimes chemicals leached from roofing materials โ so the safest water for produce remains a potable source.
If you do use rain-barrel water on food crops, the extension playbook is consistent: apply it to the soil only โ through drip irrigation or a carefully aimed watering can โ never onto the leaves or the harvestable parts; install a first-flush diverter so the dirtiest initial runoff bypasses the barrel; prefer using it early in the crop's life rather than near harvest; and always wash harvested produce thoroughly with potable water. Set up a barrel properly
- 1Place it under a downspout on a stable base โ The barrel must sit level and secure โ a full barrel is extremely heavy. Raising it on a sturdy platform improves spigot access and water pressure for gravity-fed drip lines.
- 2Fit a first-flush diverter and screened, covered inlet โ The first flush of a storm carries the highest contaminant load off the roof; a diverter routes it away from the barrel. A tight cover with a screened inlet keeps out debris, animals, and mosquitoes.
- 3Give the overflow somewhere to go โ Barrels fill fast in real storms. Direct overflow away from your foundation โ or chain a second barrel.
- 4Drain and clean seasonally โ Empty the barrel before hard freezes and clean it periodically; warm standing water is where microbial problems grow.
The edible-garden rules
- Soil, not plant: apply harvested water at the base via drip or watering can so it never contacts leaves or harvestable parts.
- Timing matters: use it on ornamentals, trees, and shrubs freely, and on vegetables early rather than close to harvest โ UConn's guidance suggests keeping a gap of several weeks before picking.
- Wash everything: produce irrigated with rain-barrel water should be washed thoroughly with potable water before eating.
- When in doubt, municipal water for produce: extensions are candid that potable water is the safest choice for edible crops.
