Home Hydroponics Basics: Kratky and Deep Water Culture
The short answer
If you want to try hydroponics at home, start with one of two closely related systems. The Kratky method, developed at the University of Hawaii, is non-circulating: a container is filled nearly to the top with nutrient solution, a lid with holes holds net pots of seedlings, and nothing else happens โ no pump, no electricity, no top-ups. As the plant drinks, the solution level falls, and the growing gap of moist air above the water becomes the oxygen supply for the roots. A lettuce grows to harvest in about six weeks on the solution it started with โ University of Hawaii trials found a full-size lettuce consumes only around 3โ4 liters.
Deep water culture (DWC) is the same suspended-roots idea plus an air pump and air stone bubbling oxygen into the reservoir. That makes it slightly more equipment and maintenance (pH, nutrient concentration, and aeration need periodic checks) in exchange for faster growth and more flexibility; extensions describe it as the most common, least expensive system for home-scale growers. Either way, the honest scope: these systems shine for lettuce, spinach, kale, basil, and other leafy crops โ fruiting crops like tomatoes are possible but a much bigger step. Kratky vs DWC at a glance
- Kratky: set-and-forget. Fill once with nutrient solution, suspend seedlings in net pots through a lid, harvest weeks later. No electricity โ the falling water level exposes roots to the moist air gap that supplies oxygen.
- DWC: same architecture plus an air pump, air stone, and tubing keeping the reservoir oxygenated. The standard beginner system in extension guides; cheap to build yourself.
- Both: nutrient solution replaces soil entirely, so plants depend on you (or the initial fill) for every nutrient. Leafy greens and herbs are the proven fit for home scale.
What beginners should actually do
- 1Start with lettuce in a Kratky container โ One container, one lid with holes, net pots, growing medium, and hydroponic nutrient mix. Lettuce reaches harvest in roughly six weeks with zero intervention โ the cheapest possible proof that hydroponics works.
