Shade Cloth for the Vegetable Garden

The short answer

For most warm-season vegetables, extension sources point to about 30% shade cloth as the sweet spot: enough to cut heat stress without blocking so much light that yields fall. The trigger is heat, not the calendar. Hang it right: keep the cloth well above the foliage so hot fabric never touches leaves and air can move underneath, and remove it once the heat wave passes so plants get full light again.

DIY versus bought, and how to hang it

Knitted shade cloth sold by shade percentage is inexpensive and easy to string over hoops, stakes or a simple frame; many gardeners improvise with old sheets or row-cover fabric, accepting that the shade percentage is then a guess. Either way the installation rules are the same and they matter more than the source of the fabric.

Keep the cloth from contacting the plants: hot fabric resting on leaves can burn them, and cloth flapping in wind abrades foliage. Suspend it high enough above the canopy for air to circulate underneath, which both improves cooling and preserves the ventilation tomatoes and peppers need. Take it down when the heat breaks so plants return to full sun.
