Seeds vs Transplants, Crop by Crop

The short answer

Two factors decide almost every case: roots and season length. Root crops (carrots, beets, radishes, parsnips, turnips) plus peas, beans, corn, and spinach are best sown directly in the garden, because transplanting disturbs the root, and for root crops the root is the harvest: moved carrots come out forked and stunted. Long-season, frost-tender crops (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) and early spring brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower) go in as transplants because they need a head start the outdoor season cannot give them.

Cucumbers, squash, melons, and onions work either way: direct-sow them in long-season areas, or use transplants started three to four weeks ahead where summers are short. Cost is the tiebreaker; a packet of seed costs about as much as a single nursery transplant, so direct-sow anything that tolerates it and spend transplant money only on the crops that truly need the head start.

Direct-sow these: when the root is the point

Penn State Extension's list for direct seeding: peas, spinach, leaf lettuce, beans, corn, and the root vegetables (beets, carrots, parsnips, radishes, rutabagas, turnips). For root crops the reason is blunt: transplanting can cause misshapen roots, and since the root is the part you harvest, direct seeding beats transplanting. Carrots are the classic case, coming out forked or stunted after any root disturbance.

Beans, peas, and corn germinate fast and grow quickly in warm soil, so a transplant head start buys little; they are also sown in quantity, where transplants would be absurdly expensive. Sow beans and corn after frost danger passes, and succession-sow (beans every couple of weeks, for example) for a continuous harvest rather than one glut.

  • Fast greens: spinach, leaf lettuce (though lettuce also transplants fine)

Transplant these: when the season is too short

Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant are long-season, frost-tender crops; started from seed outdoors in most climates they would barely begin fruiting before fall frost. They go into the garden as stocky transplants once the soil is warm, in late spring. Tomatoes handle root disturbance unusually well, which is why they can be potted up repeatedly indoors without harm.

Early cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and head lettuce are transplanted for the opposite end of the calendar: set out as sturdy plants in early spring, they mature before summer heat ruins their quality. (Broccoli and similar brassicas can also be direct-seeded in summer for a fall crop, when warm soil makes germination fast.) Either way: the judgment calls

Cucumbers, melons, and squash can be direct-sown once soil is warm, and in most climates that is the simplest route. Where the growing season is short, transplants started indoors three to four weeks ahead can mean a meaningfully earlier and larger harvest. These vine crops resent root disturbance, so when you do transplant them, start them in individual pots, plant them young, and handle the root ball as little as possible.

Onions are flexible too: direct-sown seed, sets, or transplants all work, with transplants and sets giving bigger bulbs in short seasons. When in doubt, your local extension planting calendar settles the question for your climate.

โœ” Spend your transplant budget where it pays: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and spring brassicas. Direct-sow nearly everything else and pocket the difference.

The cost math

A seed packet holding dozens to hundreds of seeds typically costs about the same as one nursery transplant. For a crop like beans or carrots, where you might grow fifty plants, transplants make no financial sense even before the root-disturbance problem. For a crop where you grow four plants and each needs a two-month indoor head start, like tomatoes, buying (or raising) transplants is cheap insurance on a whole season.
