Why Is My Pepper Plant Not Producing Fruit?
The short answer
A pepper plant that flowers heavily but sets no fruit is almost always dropping its blossoms, and temperature is the usual reason. Extension guidance is that peppers set fruit best between about 75 and 86 degrees F, that night temperatures below roughly 72 degrees F give poor set, and that temperatures above 90 degrees F or below 55 degrees F cause heavy blossom drop. Very warm nights above about 75 degrees F also slow or stop pod production.
If the weather has been in a good range and flowers still drop, look at nitrogen and pollination: too much nitrogen fertilizer drives lush foliage at the expense of fruit, and still air or few pollinators can leave the self-fertile flowers under-pollinated. The reassuring part is that heat-related drop is temporary, so set usually resumes as temperatures moderate; if it does not, ease off high-nitrogen feeding and check your watering before assuming the plant is failing.
Temperature drives blossom drop
Peppers are more temperature-sensitive about fruit set than many gardeners expect. Extension sources put good fruit set in the roughly 75 to 86 degrees F range, note that night temperatures below about 72 degrees F give poor set, and report heavy blossom drop when temperatures climb above 90 degrees F or fall below 55 degrees F. Hot nights matter too: when evening temperatures stay above about 75 degrees F, pod production slows or stops.
Because this is a pollination and physiology issue rather than a pest, there is nothing to spray. Set typically resumes on its own once temperatures return to the plant's comfort zone. Light afternoon shade during heat waves and steady watering can reduce how many flowers are lost.
Nitrogen, pollination, and other factors
If temperatures have been reasonable and flowers still drop, the two things to check are feeding and pollination. Excess nitrogen encourages the plant to build leaves and stems instead of setting fruit, so a big, dark-green, flower-shy plant may simply be overfed. Pepper flowers are self-fertile but need some vibration or air movement to release pollen, so very still, humid air or a shortage of pollinators can leave flowers unfertilized and shed.
Low light and root-bound container plants can also limit fruiting. Since several causes overlap, treat a stubborn case as worth ruling out one at a time: cut back high-nitrogen fertilizer, keep watering even, make sure the plant gets full sun, and if nothing helps, your local Extension office can help you diagnose it.
