How to Plant Asparagus Crowns

Steps

1. 1Dig the trench — Dig a furrow about 6 to 12 inches deep (6-8 inches in heavy clay, 10-12 inches in very sandy soil).
2. 2Space the crowns — Set crowns 15 to 18 inches apart, spreading the roots; keep rows at least 3 feet apart.
3. 3Cover lightly — Backfill just 2 to 3 inches of soil over the crowns right after planting.
4. 4Fill gradually — As spears grow through the season, keep adding soil around them (tips exposed) until the trench is filled level.
