When to Prune Stone Fruit

The short answer

Prune stone fruits (peach, cherry, plum) in spring or summer during dry weather, not in mid-winter. Winter cuts on these trees can be infected by cankers such as cytospora and by silverleaf, because the tree cannot protect fresh wounds in cold, wet conditions. A common window is from just before bloom to about two weeks after petal fall.

Train peaches, plums, and tart cherries to an open-center (vase) shape. Removing the central leader and keeping the middle open lets in light and air, which improves ripening and reduces brown rot.

Why not winter

Stone fruits are very susceptible to cytospora canker and, in some regions, silverleaf and bacterial canker. Pruning during cold, wet weather leaves wounds open to infection, so wait for spring or summer and choose a dry day.

โš  Only prune stone fruit in dry weather. Avoid pruning from roughly January through March or before budswell.

Open-center training

The natural form of peach, plum, and tart cherry is a vase. Remove the central leader early and keep three or four main scaffolds, leaving the center open so light and air reach the fruit.
