Do I Need Two Trees for Pollination?

The short answer

Many fruit trees are self-incompatible, meaning they need a different cultivar of the same fruit blooming at the same time growing nearby to set a full crop. Most apple cultivars, for example, require a second variety (a pollenizer) to cross-pollinate. Some cultivars, however, are self-fertile or partially self-fertile and can fruit on their own.

To match partners, choose cultivars in overlapping flowering groups, and keep cross-pollinating trees reasonably close, generally within about 55 feet (18 m). A few varieties known as triploids produce sterile pollen and cannot pollinate others, so they need two other compatible trees nearby.

Self-fertile vs. cross-pollinating

Self-fertile trees (for example some plums and cherries, and self-fertile apples such as certain older cultivars) can set fruit with their own pollen. Self-incompatible trees need a compatible second cultivar. Check the variety's listing before assuming one tree is enough.

Matching pollination partners

  • Pick cultivars whose bloom periods overlap (same or adjacent flowering group)
  • Keep partner trees within roughly 55 feet for effective bee transfer
  • Crabapples can pollinate many apple varieties
  • Avoid relying on triploid varieties as pollen sources; their pollen is largely sterile
