How to Grow Globe Artichokes

Site and spacing

• Full sun, fertile, well-drained soil with organic matter
• Space plants roughly 18 inches to a few feet apart; rows 2 to 4 feet apart
• Provide steady water (about 1 to 2 inches per week) during bud production
• Divide clumps every few years to keep them vigorous

Cool spring to flower

Artichokes require cool spring temperatures to initiate the flower stalk. Started too late, plants may not get the chilling they need and will not form the edible buds.

✔ In cold-winter areas, mulch or cover the crown to overwinter it, or grow artichoke as an annual from an early indoor start.
