Garden Tool Care: Clean, Sharp, and Disease-Free
The short answer
Basic tool care is three habits: clean off soil and sap after each session, keep edges sharp so cuts are clean and effort is low, and disinfect cutting blades when disease could be riding along. Iowa State University Extension's standard is that pruners should be disinfected between plants at minimum when removing diseased material, and ideally between each cut on an infected plant, so you are not injecting the pathogen into every branch you touch next.
The practical disinfectant is rubbing alcohol: wipe or dip blades in 70% isopropyl alcohol, with no prolonged soak needed, which is why a small spray bottle in your pruning bucket works so well. The alternative is a bleach solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water with blades soaked at least 10 minutes, but bleach corrodes steel edges, so rinse, dry, and oil tools afterward. One caveat straight from Extension: alcohol is not recommended for disinfecting tools used on apple trees infected with fire blight; use the bleach soak there.
After every use: the two-minute routine
Knock or rinse off soil, dry the metal, and wipe blades with an oily rag to block rust. Sap-gummed pruner blades can be cleaned with a rag and a little alcohol, which removes residue and disinfects in one pass. Store tools hanging or blade-up in a dry place; leaving them in soil or rain is where most tools actually die.
Disinfecting: when and with what
Routine pruning of healthy plants does not demand between-cut sterilizing. The rules change the moment you cut into cankers, oozing wood, wilted or spotted tissue, or any plant with a known infectious disease: then disinfect between plants at minimum, and between cuts on the infected plant itself.
Iowa State Extension's compared options: 70% isopropyl alcohol (or ethanol), used as a wipe, spray, or dip with no soak time, effective and easy, and gentler on tools than bleach; or household bleach diluted 1:9 (one part bleach to nine parts water) with a soak of at least 10 minutes, adding bleach to the water rather than the reverse, and protecting skin and clothing. Bleach pits and dulls steel over time, so alcohol is the everyday choice and bleach the heavy-duty one. Household spray cleaners are not well evaluated against plant pathogens, so skip them. And note the fire blight exception: Extension advises against relying on alcohol for tools used on fire-blight-infected apple trees.
โ Prune diseased material in dry weather when possible, bag it rather than composting it, and disinfect blades again before moving to the next plant. The disease guides on this site (fire blight, black spot, cankers) all assume this tool discipline.
Sharpening basics
Sharp bypass pruners crush less tissue, and clean cuts close faster with less disease entry. Sharpen only the factory bevel of the cutting blade with a fine file or diamond hone, following the existing angle in smooth strokes toward the edge, then remove the burr from the flat back with a single light pass. A few strokes every few weeks of heavy use beats an annual rescue grind. Shovels and hoes also work noticeably better with their edges filed.
End-of-season storage
Before winter: clean everything, sharpen edges, tighten bolts, oil metal surfaces, and treat wooden handles with linseed oil so they do not dry and crack. Drain and coil hoses, and store liquids where they will not freeze. Spring-you inherits either a rack of ready tools or a rusted pile; it is decided in November.
