Fixing Standing Water in Your Yard
The short answer
Diagnose before you dig. In a yard with decent drainage, water should soak away within roughly 24 hours; puddles that linger longer signal a real drainage problem. Note where water collects and where it comes from, and check for compacted soil, a low spot, heavy clay, or ground that slopes toward the house.
Match the fix to the cause. If water runs toward the foundation or pools near downspouts, regrade so the ground slopes away and extend the downspouts. If a specific low area stays wet, Extension notes it can be corrected by breaking up compaction or installing subsurface drainage, or by regrading so water is carried off the lawn.
For runoff you want to soak in rather than pipe away, a rain garden, a shallow planted depression placed where water collects, captures and infiltrates it, and should itself drain within about 24 hours; do not site one in ground that is already chronically wet. See the build-a-rain-garden guide.
Diagnose first
Standing water is a symptom, and the fix depends on the cause, so start by observing. After a rain, healthy, reasonably graded soil should drain within about 24 hours; water that ponds for a day or more indicates poor drainage, a depression, or compacted or clay-heavy soil. Watch where the water comes from (roof downspouts, a neighbor's slope, an overwatered zone) and where it ends up.
Check a few things. Does the ground slope toward the house rather than away? Is the wet spot a distinct low area, or does the whole yard drain slowly (pointing to compaction or clay)? Penn State Extension recommends a soil test as part of diagnosing a wet area, since soil composition itself drives drainage. Getting the cause right prevents spending money on a French drain when the real fix was a downspout extension, or vice versa.
Grading and downspouts: the first, cheapest fixes
The most common and least expensive problems involve water heading the wrong way. If runoff flows toward the foundation or collects right at the downspouts, the first moves are to extend the downspouts so they discharge well away from the house and to correct the grade so the ground slopes gently away from the foundation. Penn State Extension notes that where surface drainage is insufficient, a site may have to be regraded so water is removed from the lawn.
These surface fixes solve a large share of soggy-yard complaints without any buried pipe. Also relieve compaction where the whole lawn drains slowly: core aeration and topdressing with compost improve infiltration over time (see the dethatching-and-aeration and leveling guides).
Subsurface drainage vs. a rain garden
When a specific low area stays wet despite good surface grading, Penn State Extension notes poor drainage can be corrected by breaking up compacted soil or installing subsurface drainage (drain tile) to eliminate ponding. A French drain or drain tile is essentially a gravel-and-perforated-pipe channel that intercepts water and carries it to a lower outlet; it needs somewhere lower to drain to and periodic maintenance to keep from clogging.
A rain garden takes the opposite approach: instead of piping water away, it captures runoff and lets it soak in. UMN Extension describes a rain garden as a planted depression that soaks up runoff from roofs, driveways, and compacted lawn, absorbing about 30% more water than an equivalent patch of lawn, and it should drain completely within 24 hours. Importantly, UMN says not to place a rain garden in areas that are consistently wet, so a rain garden treats runoff that arrives and sits briefly, not a permanently waterlogged low spot, which needs drainage or regrading instead.
