Drip Irrigation vs. Soaker Hose: Which Should You Use?
The short answer
Both put water at the soil, not on the leaves โ which saves water and cuts disease compared to overhead sprinklers. A soaker hose is a porous hose that seeps along its whole length: cheap, quick to lay, and great for a small, level raised bed. Drip irrigation uses tubing with emitters that place water at each plant: more precise, far more flexible (routes into pots, rows, and around trees, handles slopes), and longer-lived, but it costs more and takes more setup.
Pick a soaker hose for a simple small bed on a budget; pick drip for larger, longer, or sloped gardens, containers, or anywhere you want to target individual plants.
Soaker hose โ best for
- Small, level beds and raised beds.
- Low upfront cost and fast, tool-free setup.
- Even seeping along the length (you can't shut off just part of it).
Drip irrigation โ best for
- Larger gardens, long rows, and sloped ground.
- Containers, individual trees/shrubs, and precise per-plant delivery.
- Longer service life and less water waste, at a higher upfront cost and setup effort.
Either way
โ Put both on a timer, run them in the early morning, and cover them with mulch to cut evaporation further. Both are far more efficient than an overhead sprinkler.
