Seed Saving and Cross-Pollination: What Crosses, What Doesn't, and Why Hybrids Disappoint

The short answer

Cross-pollination happens along species lines, which is why the squash question has a precise answer. Common squashes fall into species groups, and they only cross within a group. SDSU Extension lists them by common name: zucchini, yellow crookneck, acorn, spaghetti, pattypan, delicata, pumpkins and most gourds all may cross with each other; butternut, buttercup, banana, hubbard, and turban may cross with each other; and the melon group (muskmelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, casaba, Armenian cucumber) crosses among itself but not with squashes, pumpkins, or cucumbers.

Cucumbers, watermelon, and loofah gourds cross only with themselves, not with squash or melons. So planting zucchini next to butternut is fine for seed saving, but planting two different pepo types (say zucchini and acorn) side by side means their saved seed can cross.

Two rules cut through the confusion. Seed saved from an F1 hybrid will not come true to type regardless of isolation, so save seed only from open-pollinated varieties. And a cross does not affect the fruit you eat this year: the pollen source does not change the current season's fruit, it only shows up if you save that seed and grow it out the following year.

What crosses with what

The single most useful fact for a seed saver is that cross-pollination is limited to the same species. Different varieties within a species will readily cross; different species will not. For squash this means you have to know which species each variety belongs to. Per SDSU Extension: one group is zucchini, yellow crookneck, acorn, spaghetti, pattypan, delicata, pumpkins and gourds (except edible snake gourds), which all may cross with each other; another is butternut, buttercup, banana, hubbard, and turban, which may cross with each other.

Melons are their own world: muskmelon, cantaloupe, charentais, honeydew, casaba, Armenian cucumber, and snake melon can all cross with each other, but not with squashes, pumpkins, or cucumbers. Cucumbers, watermelon, and loofah gourds cross only with themselves. So the honest short answer to will my squash cross is: only with other squash of the same species.

Hybrids don't come true

If your plant is an F1 hybrid, the cross-pollination question is almost beside the point, because the seed will not grow true anyway. Hybrids are deliberate crosses of two parent lines, and their seed segregates into a mix of the grandparents' traits in the next generation. Plants grown from saved hybrid seed can be very different from the parent and may even be inedible.

For seed saving that gives you the same variety back, start with open-pollinated (including heirloom) varieties, and then manage isolation so they do not cross with a compatible variety. Seed packets and catalogs label whether a variety is hybrid (F1) or open-pollinated.

The delayed surprise: this year's fruit is fine

A common misunderstanding is that a cross ruins the fruit on the plant now. It does not. The pollen source does not affect the current season's fruit; if a bee carries acorn pollen to your zucchini flower, the zucchini you harvest is still a normal zucchini. The cross is hidden in the seeds inside it.

The difference only appears the following year: if you save the seed from that cross-pollinated fruit and plant it, the resulting plants can be very different. That is why seed savers isolate compatible varieties. SDSU gives an isolation distance of one-half to one mile to keep compatible types from crossing; where that is impractical, hand-pollination and blossom-taping, or growing only one variety per species, are the practical home alternatives. Follow only the isolation distances your source states rather than mixing numbers from different guides.
