How to Overwinter Rosemary and Tender Perennial Herbs

The short answer

In regions where rosemary is not winter-hardy, grow it in a pot and bring it indoors before hard frost, ideally 2 to 3 weeks before your first fall frost date. Give it the brightest spot you have, such as a south-facing window or supplemental light, with good air circulation and cool room temperatures.

The biggest risks indoors are too little light and improper watering. Let rosemary dry slightly between waterings; it is prone to root rot in wet, poorly drained soil, so a clay pot that dries quickly helps. Move it back outdoors after frost danger passes in spring.

Timing and location

  • Pot up tender rosemary and bring it in 2 to 3 weeks before the first fall frost
  • Place in a south-facing window in full sun, or use supplemental lighting
  • Keep good airflow and avoid hot, dry drafts
  • Move back outside once spring frost danger has passed

Watering and drainage

Let rosemary dry out slightly between waterings. It is sensitive to wet, poorly drained soil, and overwatering causes root rot. Clay pots dry faster and reduce that risk.

โš  Overwintering rosemary indoors is tricky; low light plus too much water (root rot) are the usual causes of failure.
