How to Grow Marjoram
The short answer
Marjoram is an aromatic, sun-loving Mediterranean herb closely related to oregano but distinct from it. Sweet marjoram has smaller, softer, grayer-green leaves and a milder, sweeter flavor, while oregano leaves are larger and more pungent and spicy. Marjoram is also more tender and is often grown as an annual or in containers in cold regions.
Grow marjoram in full sun in very well-drained soil, adding grit or compost to improve drainage. Start seed indoors with warmth in late winter to spring, plant out after frost, water until established, and prune regularly to keep plants compact and productive.
Marjoram vs oregano
Though both are Origanum species, they are different herbs. Use the flavor and leaf cues to tell them apart and to grow each well.
- Marjoram: smaller, softer, gray-green leaves; sweeter, milder flavor; more tender, likes regular pruning to stay compact.
- Oregano: larger leaves; stronger, spicier, more pungent flavor; hardier and thrives with little maintenance in sandy, well-drained soil.
Planting and care
Choose a sunny spot with excellent drainage. Marjoram suits herb beds, borders, and containers.
