What to Do in the Garden in July (Warm-Climate US)

Plant and sow

• Start tomato seeds for the fall garden (UF/IFAS July task); in Texas, set fall tomato transplants late July into early August.
• Keep sowing southern peas and okra in the lower South for fall pods.
• Plant heat-proof color: butterfly lily, gladiolus, society garlic, portulaca, vinca.
• Sow pumpkin seeds early-to-mid month in the South for Halloween harvest.
• Order or buy seed now for the fall garden — brassica seed racks empty fast in the South.

Maintain and protect

• Begin soil solarization on empty beds: clear plastic sealed over moist soil for about six weeks of peak sun (UF/IFAS).
• Water deeply and early; deep-soak fruit and nut trees through peak heat.
• Keep mulch thick and mow high — taller grass shades roots and needs less water.
• Avoid heavy pruning and avoid fertilizing heat-stressed plants until temperatures ease.
• Scout for spider mites on tomatoes and beans — they explode in hot, dry weather; a hard water spray helps.

Harvest

• Pick okra every 1-2 days, and keep peppers, eggplant, southern peas, and melons harvested.
• Harvest figs as they ripen across the South.
• Pull spent spring tomato plants that have quit setting fruit in the heat; healthy ones can be cut back to regrow for fall in the Gulf South.
