The short answer
A handful of companion-planting effects are real. Marigolds suppress lesion and root-knot nematodes because their roots exude alpha-terthienyl, but only as a dense standing cover crop grown on the exact spot two months ahead โ interplanting a few marigolds among tomatoes does not work, and they can even raise stubby-root and sting nematode numbers.
Much of the rest is folk wisdom. There is no scientific evidence that basil improves tomato flavor, though recent studies do show basil's volatiles can prime a tomato's pest defenses. Extensions themselves call companion planting 'not an exact science' and advise treating charts as experiments to test in your own garden, not proven rules.
Marigolds and nematodes โ real, but only done right
This is the best-documented claim, and it is genuinely supported: marigolds (Tagetes) suppress plant-parasitic nematodes because their living roots release alpha-terthienyl, one of the most toxic naturally occurring compounds known, which inhibits nematode egg hatch. University of Florida notes marigolds suppress 14 genera, with lesion (Pratylenchus) and root-knot (Meloidogyne) nematodes suppressed most strongly, and French marigolds (T. patula) effective against the widest range.
The catch is in the how. It only works as a dense cover crop grown on the actual spot the vegetable will follow, planted at least two months ahead at spacing under about 7 inches. Interplanting a handful of marigolds among your tomatoes 'does not appear to be effective,' and against some pests marigolds can backfire โ they can increase stubby-root, spiral, sting, and awl nematodes.
So the fair verdict: marigolds are a real nematode tool for a fallow bed with a known nematode problem, not a magic border that protects whatever grows beside them.
Three sisters and trap crops โ real for structural reasons
The three-sisters planting of corn, beans, and squash is a real, working system, but for concrete structural reasons rather than mystical plant friendship: the corn gives the beans a living trellis, the beans fix nitrogen, and the sprawling squash shades the ground and suppresses weeds. It is a good illustration that the companion effects with the best evidence tend to be physical โ support, shade, nitrogen โ not aromatic.
Trap cropping โ planting something a pest prefers so it leaves the main crop alone โ is a studied technique with genuinely mixed results. Some pairings work and some flop, so it is worth trying in specific, documented combinations rather than assuming any 'attractant' plant will draw pests away.
The basil-tomato flavor myth (and what basil may actually do)
The single most repeated companion claim โ that basil makes tomatoes taste better โ has no scientific support. It persists because both plants love the same warm, sunny, moist conditions and simply grow well side by side, which is a fine reason to plant them together but not evidence of a flavor effect.
Where basil may earn its keep is pest defense: recent research found that volatile compounds released by basil can prime a neighboring tomato's wound-response system, and caterpillars fed on basil-exposed tomato leaves grew less. That is an emerging, more mechanistic result โ useful context, but a long way from 'basil improves flavor.'
The honest takeaway extensions themselves give: companion planting is 'not an exact science,' results vary by climate, soil, and pest, and the smart move is to record what actually happens in your own garden year to year rather than trust a chart.
