Transplant Shock in Trees and Shrubs: Signs and Recovery
The short answer
Transplant shock is the stress a tree or shrub goes through after planting or moving, mostly caused by root loss and roots drying out. The signs: wilting, leaf scorch (yellowing or browning between veins and along leaf edges), leaf curling and drop, an overall grey-green cast on needled evergreens, and greatly reduced growth with small leaves and short shoots. It's common and usually survivable.
Recovery is mostly about water and time. Keep the root zone evenly moist (roughly at least 1 inch of water per week in well-drained soil), but don't drown it โ overwatering is as harmful as underwatering. Mulch the root zone, do NOT fertilize a stressed new plant, and be patient: woody plants often take a year or more, sometimes several, to shake it off. New growth is the sign it's establishing.
Signs of transplant shock
- Wilting leaves, especially on recent transplants.
- Leaf scorch โ yellowing or bronzing between the veins or along leaf margins, later drying brown.
- Leaf rolling, curling, or premature leaf drop.
- Grey-green cast on the foliage of needled evergreens (an early water-stress sign).
- Overall reduced growth: shortened shoots and smaller-than-normal leaves.
How to help it recover
- 1Water correctly โ Keep the root ball and surrounding soil evenly moist โ about 1 inch of water per week in well-drained soil, adjusted for rain and soil type. Both over- and under-watering worsen shock.
- 2Mulch โ Mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture and steady soil temperature; keep it off the trunk.
- 3Don't fertilize yet โ Skip fertilizer on a freshly planted or moved plant โ it doesn't fix root stress and can make things worse. Wait until it's established.
- 4Be patient โ It commonly takes a year or more, sometimes several years, for a woody plant to fully recover. Watch for healthy new growth as the sign of establishment.
โ A little wilting or leaf drop right after transplanting is normal. Focus on steady moisture and give the plant a full season before deciding it's failing.
