Is It Too Late to Plant Spring Bulbs?
The short answer
As long as the soil is not frozen solid and you can still dig, it is not too late — plant spring-flowering bulbs (tulips, daffodils, crocus) in November, December, and even into January. They need the cold winter period in the ground to bloom, and holding them indoors until spring almost always fails because the bulbs dry out and rot.
Late-planted bulbs may bloom a bit later or shorter in their first spring, and an occasional one may come up 'blind' (leaves but no flower), but a firm, healthy bulb in cold ground beats a shriveled bulb in a bag. When in doubt, get them in the ground.
Why you plant anyway instead of waiting
Spring bulbs need weeks of cold to trigger flowering, and they get that by overwintering in the soil. A bulb stored dry through winter and planted in spring has missed that trigger and has usually desiccated.
Firm, plump bulbs planted late still root and chill. Discard only bulbs that have gone soft, moldy, or papery-light.
What to expect from a late planting
Blooms may open a little later than usual and the first-year display can be shorter. Some bulbs may produce foliage without a flower the first spring, then settle in the following year.
Tulips in particular tolerate — even benefit from — later planting, since cold soil discourages some fungal problems. The window closes only when the ground freezes hard enough that you cannot dig a proper hole.
