What Is Your Soil Texture? (Sand, Silt, Clay, Loam)
The short answer
Soil texture is the proportion of sand (large, gritty), silt (medium, floury), and clay (tiny, sticky) particles. 'Loam' โ the ideal for most plants โ is a balanced mix (roughly 40% sand, 40% silt, 20% clay) that holds moisture and nutrients while still draining and letting air reach roots.
You can estimate your texture at home with the ribbon test: moisten a handful, roll it into a cigar, and squeeze it into a ribbon between thumb and finger. No ribbon = sandy; a short ribbon (1-2 inches) = loam; a long ribbon (over 2 inches) = clay-heavy. Whatever you have, adding organic matter moves it toward loam-like behavior.
The three particles
- Sand: largest, feels gritty; drains fast, dries out and loses nutrients quickly.
- Silt: medium, feels smooth/floury; holds moisture well.
- Clay: smallest, feels sticky; holds water and nutrients but drains slowly and compacts.
- Loam: a balanced blend โ the best of all three, ideal for most gardens.
The ribbon test
- 1Moisten a handful โ Add water drop by drop until the soil is like modeling clay.
- 2Roll a 'cigar' โ Roll it into a shape about 1/2-3/4 inch across.
- 3Press into a ribbon โ Squeeze it out between thumb and forefinger and read the length: no ribbon = sandy; ~1-2 in = loam; over 2 in = clayey.
โ You can't change texture by adding sand or clay (that backfires) โ but organic matter makes sandy soil hold more and clay drain better, so both behave more like loam. See the clay-soil and sandy-soil guides.
