How-to Guide
Can You Reuse Potting Soil, and How to Refresh It
The short answer
You can reuse potting soil. Over a season it breaks down, loses nutrients, and gets less porous, so refresh it before replanting: tip it out, pull large roots, break it back to a fluffy texture, and blend in fresh material โ roughly a 50:50 mix with new potting mix and/or compost, or about 70% old to 30% fresh organic matter. This restores structure, aeration, and drainage more than it adds nutrients, so plan to fertilize regularly through the season as well.
The one time to not reuse it is when the previous plant had a root disease โ discard that media rather than spreading the problem. Container plants rarely suffer soil-borne disease otherwise, so mix from healthy pots is generally safe, and it also works as a mulch around established plants.
How to refresh spent mix
- 1Empty and clean out โ Tip the old mix out and remove large sections of root and debris.
- 2Break it up โ Work it back to a smooth, fluffy texture by hand โ spent mix compacts and loses porosity.
- 3Blend in fresh material โ Mix roughly 50:50 with fresh potting mix and/or compost, or add organic matter to about 70% old / 30% new.
- 4Feed as you grow โ Because refreshing adds little nutrition, fertilize regularly to compensate for depleted nutrients.
When not to reuse it
โ Don't save media if root disease was a problem in that pot. Mix from healthy container plants is generally safe to reuse or spread as mulch.
