How to Grow Sweet Alyssum
The short answer
Sweet alyssum is one of the few annuals you can jump the frost date with: hardened-off transplants can go into the garden a week or two before the average last frost (University of Wisconsin Horticulture). Direct-sown seed flowers in about 6-8 weeks. Give it full sun in cool climates — partial shade where summers run hot — and average, well-drained soil.
It forms a fragrant 3-9 inch carpet that's perfect for edging, containers, and cascading from baskets. When plants go leggy or stall in summer heat, shear them back; they reflower and then run strong well into fall.
When to Plant
Start seed indoors several weeks before the average last frost, or direct sow into the garden. Wisconsin Horticulture notes that hardened-off transplants tolerate light frost and can be planted a week or two ahead of the last-frost date — a genuine head start over tender annuals. Direct sowings begin flowering within 6-8 weeks.
Sun, Soil, and Water
Full sun in cool climates; in hot regions alyssum appreciates partial or afternoon shade. It wants average, well-drained soil with medium moisture — overly rich soil pushes foliage at the expense of flowers (Wisconsin Horticulture).
It tolerates short dry spells but blooms best with consistent moisture. The failure mode is the opposite: excess moisture plus crowding causes rot.
Shearing: The One Maintenance Job
Alyssum flowers more profusely if deadheaded, but nobody deadheads a thousand tiny blooms — shear instead. When plants get leggy, ragged, or stall in summer heat, cut them back; new growth reflowers in a few weeks and the plants revive fully as fall cools, lasting well into autumn (Wisconsin Horticulture).
✔ Summer shutdown is normal in hot weather, not death. Shear, water, and wait — alyssum's best show is often September.
Where It Shines
- Edging paths and bed fronts — a 3-9 inch mounding carpet with a honey scent.
- Containers and hanging baskets, where it cascades over the rim.
- Ground cover between taller annuals and in rock gardens (Wisconsin Horticulture).
Self-Seeding and Problems
Sweet alyssum may reseed, but not aggressively. Note that volunteers from named varieties usually revert to taller, white-flowered plants (Wisconsin Horticulture).
Problems are few: rot in wet, crowded plantings, and older plants splitting open to flower only at the edges — both fixed by spacing and shearing.
